In other data news, on January 12th, The Conversation published an article entitled Data brokers know everything about you – what FTC case against ad tech giant Kochava reveals. In this story, Anne Toomey McKenna describes the FTC case against Kochava, a major player in mobile app data analytics, over its secretive data acquisition and AI-aided analytics practices. The FTC alleges Kochava's sale of a "360-degree perspective" on individuals, connecting precise geolocation data with demographics, could lead to discrimination and violence, highlighting the need for updated U.S. laws regulating commercially available data and AI governance.

  • In addition to numerous lesser-known data brokers, the mobile data market includes larger players like Foursquare and data market exchanges like Amazon’s AWS Data Exchange. The FTC’s recently unsealed amended complaint against Kochava makes clear that there’s truth to what Kochava advertises: it can provide data for 'Any Channel, Any Device, Any Audience,' and buyers can 'Measure Everything with Kochava.'”
