Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to Data & Analytics companies that share our passion for serving the Public Sector. This week, we feature a request from the National Institute of Health (NIH) for solutions that provide accurate, automated, AI-driven annotation at scale for their repositories of high-definition cancer images used as machine learning training data.

Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), National Institute of Health (NIH) — Advances in Artificial Intelligence to Generate AIMI Annotations - To develop reliable AI models for cancer imaging and potential clinic use, the availability of cancer images with high-quality annotations is crucial. However, manual annotation by experts is not feasible for large-scale datasets because of the level of effort needed by highly trained experts. Over the past several years, there have been significant advancements in the development of models that perform image segmentation of tumors with high accuracy. Applications of advanced DL models to publicly available imaging data can help generate annotations in the form of tumor segmentations that would be useful to the research community in the downstream development of medical imaging AI models.
In other data news, on January 27th, Federal News Network published an article entitled The intelligence community is coming to grips with the power of commercial data. In this story, Tom Temin interviews Tara Murphy Dougherty, CEO of Govini, about the Intelligence Community's growing dependence on enterprise-wide access to commercial intelligence.

“Think about data that tells you information about demographics, or people’s movement around the world. It was that process of ultimately combining those high fidelity datasets and doing so at scale that helped us, not just understand what was happening with the pandemic, but start to get our arms around a response. And so from public health to military operations, and national security intelligence, this trend is impacting that wide of a range of activities.”
