In other data news, on September 25th , NextGov/FCW published an article entitled Democratic report: DOGE is risking Americans’ data by operating outside federal law. In this story, Edward Graham and Natalie Alms describe a Senate report alleging that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) operated outside federal law, endangering Americans' data by uploading it to insecure cloud environments. Citing whistleblower claims and a risk assessment of a "catastrophic" breach, the report urges immediate curbs on DOGE’s access and calls for stronger compliance.

  • Chuck Borges, SSA’s former chief data officer, said that DOGE employees at the agency 'had access to personal data on all Americans, including Social Security numbers (SSNs), in a cloud environment without any verified security controls and without standard agency visibility into their use of that data' — a level of access that even exceeded Borges’ role. ”
