Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with the OCC’s request for a global macro modeling platform that supports cross-country stress scenarios, delivers contractor-authored global risk narratives, and provides accessible underlying data for supervisory analysis. It also seeks U.S. historical and forecast data at the national, state, and MSA levels with multiple scenarios, weekly commentary, and export rights for internal research.
In other data news, on November 20th, Associated Press (AP) published an article entitled Border Patrol is monitoring US drivers and detaining those with ‘suspicious’ travel patterns. In this story, Byron Tau and Garance Burke describe how the U.S. Border Patrol's surveillance has expanded deep into the nation’s interior, using a covert network of license plate readers and predictive algorithms to track millions of Americans’ travel patterns. The system flags “suspicious” behavior and drives pretextual stops, effectively transforming CBP into a domestic intelligence operation built on large-scale behavioral surveillance.

“'They are collecting mass amounts of information about who people are, where they go, what they do, and who they know … engaging in dragnet surveillance of Americans on the streets, on the highways, in their cities, in their communities,' Nicole Ozer, the executive director of the Center for Constitutional Democracy at UC Law San Francisco, said in response to the AP’s findings. 'These surveillance systems do not make communities safer.'”
