Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured item highlights the U.S. Census Bureau’s plan to acquire comprehensive, linkable commercial housing data to modernize surveys and reduce respondent burden. It’s a must-read for property, rental, MLS, and valuation data providers with nationwide coverage and strong data-quality controls.
-
Department of Commerce, U.S. Census Bureau — Commercial Housing Data Requirements - The purpose of this requirement is to acquire commercial datasets containing housing data for the 50 states, the district of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. territories (where possible). These datasets shall be sourced from local public records, such as property tax assessments, and non-public sources, such as Multiple Listing Services (MLS) listings. The data may also be enhanced by the data providers, most importantly by the provision of estimated home values from a vetted automated valuation model.
In other data news, on December 3rd, GovConWire published an article entitled When People, Suppliers & Threats Converge, Only a Risk Intelligence Platform Works. In this story, Benji Hutchinson describes how modern threats blur the lines between identity risk, vendor risk, and external threat activity, requiring national security organizations to fuse disparate data into a single, intelligence-driven risk platform. He argues that AI-native, integrated platforms are essential to move government and defense enterprises from reactive defense to predictive protection.
-
“According to the U.S. Department of War, today’s defense ecosystem includes hundreds of thousands of small, medium and large companies across the defense industrial base and the broader supply chain. That scale and complexity create significant potential entry points for foreign influence, cyber compromise, intellectual property theft and operational disruption.”
