Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's solicitation for a source of data, insight, and analysis on critical supply chains, including detailed global forecasts, market assessments, and expert consultation. NGA requires unclassified datasets with company-level intelligence (including production, M&A activity, and geolocation data) and regular industry assessments to support global trade and supply chain monitoring.

In other data news, on May 9th, NPR published an article entitled USDA, DOGE demand states hand over personal data about food stamp recipients. In this story, Jude Joffe-Block and Stephen Fowler detail new Department of Agriculture demands for states to provide extensive personal data on food assistance (SNAP) recipients, raising alarm among privacy advocates. Critics fear this data collection, ostensibly for program integrity, could violate privacy and be weaponized for mass surveillance or immigration enforcement rather than addressing actual fraud.

  • The latest data demands are 'absolutely alarming,' and 'reckless' and likely violate the Privacy Act and other statutes, said John Davisson, senior counsel and director of litigation at the nonprofit Electronic Privacy Information Center. He and other advocates warn the data could be used to enable deportation and mass surveillance efforts and would do little to address improper payments. 'It is an unprecedented extension of the administration's campaign to consolidate personal data,' Davisson said.”
