Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with the Department of the Interior's search for a contractor to provide soft tri-merge credit reporting for employment screening. The contractor must offer a secure online portal for immediate access to detailed credit reports, with an estimated 1,500 checks annually over a potential five-year term.

  • Department of Interior (DoI), Interior Business Center (IBC), Human Resources Directorate (HRD) — Tri-Credit Reporting Services - The Interior Business Center’s (IBC) Human Resources Directorate (HRD) has a continued need for credit check services to support its mission. As HRD does not possess the magnitude of manpower and specialized expertise necessary to fully accomplish its objective, this Statement of Work (SOW) outlines the tasks to be performed by the Contractor to assist HRD in meeting the Governments mission objectives. The Government seeks a vendor to provide a comprehensive product or service that enables HRD, Personnel Security Branch (PSB), to conduct a soft tri-merge credit check on individuals for employment purposes. This report should include name, debtors, amount of credit, amount outstanding, amount overdue, if any.

In other data news, on March 25th, Federal News Network published an article entitled The nation’s statisticians worry about the state of federal data gathering. In this story, Tom Temin describes former U.S. Chief Statistician Nancy Potok's concerns over the mounting risks to federal statistical agencies due to underfunding, political interference, and outdated infrastructure. Without stronger legal protections and investment in modernization, the accuracy and reliability of government data could significantly decline.

  • But in the heyday of the federal statistical system, there were some members of Congress who really understood this value as a public good and they were staunch defenders of the system and they made sure it was funded and they invested in the research because right now with the way the data world has changed, you need to invest in new methods for collecting data. ”
