Department of Commerce, Office of the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs — Commercial Data Hub Pilot Program - The purpose of this Statement of Work is to obtain commercially available data on behalf of DOC under a Commercial Data Hub pilot program. The Data Hub pilot consists of an open and continuous procurement under which sources may submit proposals for delivery of commercial data within the general subject areas identified herein. In order to make use of this data, DOC will pilot the strategic acquisition of commercial data through enterprise-wide acquisition vehicles. Without these vehicles, bureaus risk duplicative, costly purchases without the ability to share data across the enterprise.
In other data news, on February 2nd, The Register published an article entitled The FCC wants to criminalize AI robocall spam. In this story, Katyanna Quach describes how the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is actively pursuing measures to criminalize AI-powered robocalls. FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel has raised concerns about the rising wave of scams involving voice-cloning technology, emphasizing the potential of machine-learning software to deceive individuals into fraudulent activities.
-
“'AI-generated voice cloning and images are already sowing confusion by tricking consumers into thinking scams and frauds are legitimate. No matter what celebrity or politician you favor, or what your relationship is with your kin when they call for help, it is possible we could all be a target of these faked calls,' (Jessica) Rosenworcel, FCC Chairwoman, said this week.”

State privacy laws largely fail to protect consumer data, report shows | The report, authored by the nonprofit Electronic Privacy Information Center and the research organization U.S. PIRG Education Fund, evaluated the 14 “comprehensive” — a term commonly ascribed to such legislation — laws states have passed to protect consumer privacy, and assigned each a letter grade based on its efficacy. None received an “A” grade and half received a failing grade. The weakness of the laws, researchers claim, results from the lack of a federal privacy law and lobbying by big tech companies like Amazon and Meta. | |
