Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to Data & Analytics companies that share our passion for serving the Public Sector. Our featured items begin with the Department of Interior's Fish & Wildlife Service, which is requesting an Open-Source Web Intelligence Search & Analysis Tool to support the agency's enforcement mission. Specifically, FWS is charged with the task of combating wildlife trafficking (i.e., the poaching of protected species and the illicit international trade of wildlife) and created the Wildlife Intelligence Unit (WIU) in response. This information platform represents an important progression in the WIU's evolution.

  • Department of Interior, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) — FWS Intelligence Unit Open-Source Search Tool - The open-source web intelligence search and analytical tool must be capable of searching, via user-built filters/queries, the internet including: the surface web (portion of the internet that is readily available to the general public and searchable with standard web search engines); the deep web (parts of the internet not visible to search engines, including pages that were not indexed, fee-for-service sites, private databases, and the dark web); dark web (part of the internet that is not visible to search engines and requires an anonymizing browser to be accessed).

In other data news, on March 3rd, Meritalk published an article entitled White House Wants $1.6B to Attack Identity Theft, Fraud. In this story, Lisbeth Perez describes the White House's spending proposal that includes $1.6 billion targeted to support federal, state, and local governments in disaster-related fraud prevention, mitigation, and response solutions.

  • The pandemic exposed significant vulnerabilities in government benefits systems, especially in preventing systemic identity theft. President Biden’s proposal builds upon the lessons learned during the pandemic and will ensure robust fraud prevention and identity theft prevention investments totaling at least $600 million. Specifically, President Biden proposes to: Provide at least $300 million to prevent identity theft in public benefits; this includes supporting the modernization of agency identity verification systems and supporting enhancements to lessen the impact on victims of identity theft.”
