Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with an RFI from the Defense Intelligence Agency seeking providers of commercial data and analytical tools to support research and analysis requirements across the Defense Department.

  • Department of Defence, Defense Intelligence Agency — Commercial Tools Portal for Publicly Available Information (PAI) Research - To support the department’s research activities across multiple business functions, the Government requires a vendor partner that can facilitate access to commercial PAI research capabilities that provide safe venue for performing research as well as curated data and aggregation/manipulation features for ad-hoc visualizations. End users are expected to be from a broad customer base across the Department and may grow from several hundred to several thousand, so a reliable solution designed for scalability is required.

In other data news, on September 25th, Bloomberg Law published an article entitled CFPB Eyes Broad Expansion of Federal Credit Reporting Standards. In this story, Evan Weinberger describes the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)'s plans for a significant overhaul of credit reporting regulations, expanding its focus to cover additional companies and introducing fresh standards for data security and dispute resolution. While the proposal includes the possibility of prohibiting the inclusion of medical debt in consumers' credit reports, it also encompasses broader changes that might reshape the credit reporting industry, sparking concerns about the CFPB's jurisdiction.

  • The agency has already signaled concerns shared by privacy advocates about the use of 'credit header data', such as a person’s name and address, for identity verification. The new outline shows the CFPB may treat that information as covered data under the credit reporting law, potentially limiting when brokers can sell it for use by lenders, law enforcement, and other entities.”
