In other data news, on April 25th, The Conversation published an article entitled Banning TikTok won’t solve social media’s foreign influence, teen harm and data privacy problems. In this story, Sarah Florini argues that banning TikTok won't solve social media's foreign influence, teen harm, and data privacy problems, as these issues are not unique to TikTok but prevalent across all social media platforms. Florini advocates for comprehensive regulation as the solution to address these threats effectively.

  • Additionally, the Chinese government hardly needs control of TikTok to access the troves of data that apps, devices and smart appliances collect from Americans. Much of this data can be purchased, completely legally, from commercial data brokers, regardless of who owns it. Data freely available for purchase on the open market has been shown to include the location data for people visiting Planned Parenthood and mobile device location pings that can be deanonymized to reveal the whereabouts of the president of the United States.”

‘AI-BOM’ bombs: Army backs off, will demand less detailed data from AI vendors

A new Cold War is brewing at sea–and the West’s security and prosperity are at stake

US wants UAE to break partnership with China, join them instead in AI race

This week, Microsoft made headlines by announcing a substantial $1.5 billion investment in G42, an AI company based in Abu Dhabi chaired by influential Emirati royal Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed al-Nahyan. The deal marks a significant move in its strategic alliance with the UAE. Sources familiar with the discussions reveal that the deal was facilitated by the US government through a series of meetings over the past year, involving prominent American tech firms like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI, among others. These efforts are part of Washington’s broader strategy to maintain leadership in AI technology, particularly in competition with China.

Are tomorrow's engineers ready to face AI's ethical challenges?

The general public depends on software engineers and computer scientists to ensure these technologies are created in a safe and ethical manner. As a sociologist and doctoral candidate interested in science, technology, engineering and math education, we are currently researching how engineers in many different fields learn and understand their responsibilities to the public. Yet our recent research, as well as that of other scholars, points to a troubling reality: The next generation of engineers often seem unprepared to grapple with the social implications of their work. What’s more, some appear apathetic about the moral dilemmas their careers may bring – just as advances in AI intensify such dilemmas.
