October 7 Reflection

We are hopeful and encouraged with the news of the first phase of the peace agreement. We anxiously await the safe return of our hostages and an end to this war. On Sunday, October 5th, we commemorated the tragic events of October 7, 2023, with a community program at a local synagogue that was co-presented with the Consulate of Israel to the Southwest and more than 45 local partners. Showing our support for the people of Israel through music by SoulFarm and Sari, prayer, and togetherness, the event was attended by 850 individuals who paid their respects to the lives lost. You can view the event online here. In a couple of weeks, a group of 40 Houstonians head to Israel for our CommUNITY journey where they will learn about the current situation in Israel, visit Federation partner organizations, and show their solidarity with Israelis.

Teen Engagement Opportunities

It’s not too late to register for the ‘25-’26 Kehillah High school year by visiting kehillahhouston.org or contacting Danielle Alexander. Kehillah High has kicked off its 11th year with a celebration for 8th–12th graders from across Houston! Teens are having fun, learning, holding deep discussions, and forming new friendships. There are many ways for teens to be involved including a community-wide summer trip to Israel for 10th–12th graders from June 10–July 2, 2026. This unforgettable journey is made possible by the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, generous donors, and RootOne subsidies. Complete this form, if interested, and stay tuned for registration and info session dates.

Education: Unpacked Series Launch

We’ve launched our education journey with OpenDor Media, creators of compelling content about Israel, Judaism, and the Jewish experience. Last week’s visit focused on “Building Foundations for Meaningful Israel Education,” with Yoni Buchman of Unpacked/OpenDor Media speaking at the Lion of Judah Fall Brunch, engaging teens at Kehillah High and the Teen Israel Fellowship, and leading a community film discussion with Stuart Dow, Head of The Emery/Weiner School. Stay tuned for details about the next visit in late October, exploring “Bridging Divides and Strengthening Community.”

Get Your Spot for Chutzpah Girls Today

Celebrate the Jewish women in your life. Attend the Federation’s Yom Limmud and Women’s Philanthropy event on Oct. 22 featuring the author Tami Schlossberg Pruwer and her book “Chutzpah Girls: 100 Tales of Daring Jewish Women.” A conversation with the author will be moderated by Yom Limmud Chair Hilary Cohen. Event cost includes a signed copy of the book, a meet and great with the author, and a dessert reception. Grab your daughter and/or your girlfriends and join us for this fun evening. This event is generously underwritten by Becky and Joe Williams.

Your Impact: Core Support for Local Organizations

We are turning your dollars into action! Our board has allocated the more than $9 million you generously donated to the 2025 Annual Campaign. Approximately 28% of these funds support the operational expenses of more than 30 Jewish local organizations and schools, strengthening the foundation of Jewish Houston. This includes community partners such as Alexander Jewish Family Service, the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center, Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services, Jewish day and early childhood schools, Hillel and Chabad on college campuses, and so much more. Because of your generosity, this year, we added new funding recipients including the Texas Jewish overnight camps (CYJ and GFC), Friendship Circle, Jewish Children’s Regional Service Special Needs Assistance, Mesivta of Houston, and NCSY Jewish Student Union Clubs.

Security Reminder

If you see something concerning, say something. It is critical to utilize the SCN Incident Reporting Form to report any antisemitic incidents you know of. Filling out this form allows us to coordinate a response with local law enforcement and Secure Community Network, the official security organization of the Jewish community in North America.
