Win for SNAP: Keep Up the Pressure!

Congress is facing a different landscape on their return to Washington this week. Recent military actions in the Middle East have added a new layer of complexity to the already contentious debates in Congress, as negotiations surrounding the “Big Beautiful Bill” continue.

However, in a big win for our advocacy efforts, Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled late Friday that a provision that would shift a portion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to states should be struck from the bill. You can read more about the ruling here.

MacDonough made sweeping decisions about what provisions can and cannot be included in the reconciliation package. These decisions are based on the Senate’s Byrd Rule, which prevents policy changes from being included in budget reconciliation bills. Reconciliation bills can be passed with a simple majority, rather than meeting the 60-vote threshold required to pass other bills under debate. To ensure policy changes aren't pushed through using the less rigorous process, the Byrd Rule requires that provisions not directly related to budget matters are removed from reconciliation bill.

Meeting and Tour With Congressman Mike Lawler

The Arc Greater Hudson Valley was honored to host Congressman Mike Lawler for a tour of its day programs and residences. Lawler was welcomed by members of The Arc Greater Hudson Valley executive team, board members, and local leaders. The tour provided an opportunity for guests to learn more about The Arc Greater Hudson Valley and the important work they do. View a photo gallery of the visit here.

Following the tour, The Arc Greater Hudson Valley Executive Director Regina McKenny-Snead and The Arc New York CEO Erik Geizer, had a productive meeting with Congressman Lawler. They emphasized how wider cuts to Medicaid expansion populations and SNAP benefits would harm people with disabilities.

We are hopeful the Congressman will keep these important conversations in mind and carry our message to his colleagues in Washington
