The Senate passed their version of the “Big Beautiful Bill” today. It now goes back to the House for their consideration. There is vocal opposition among national and NYS House members, and it is crucial that we keep them fighting.
After a long weekend of intentional delays, failed attempts to amend the legislation, and backroom deals to secure votes, the Senate bill passed when the 50-50 vote was broken by Vice President Vance. The bill they passed would cut Medicaid spending by nearly a TRILLION dollars.
House moderates and conservatives are at odds with new and changing bill language, which they've had little time to review, and some are adamant the Senate bill goes too far, compared to the original House bill. More on that below. With so much controversy remaining, they could be hard-pressed to meet their self-imposed July 4 deadline to deliver a unified bill to the President.
This is a critical time for us to take action!
We MUST raise our voices to preserve Medicaid. We are calling on you to:
- call your representatives and tell them why you oppose cuts to Medicaid,
-
send a letter through our one click,
- post and share on social media - tag your legislator!
-
tell your stories, and
- use solid data to show just how devastating the proposed cuts would be.
The Arc of the United States created an excellent info sheet outlining the specific impact Medicaid and SNAP cuts would have on New Yorkers, and another info sheet explaining how proposed work requirements would harm people with disabilities. These resources can help you craft a more targeted message to your lawmakers through our one-click tool, and in your meetings and calls.
*Note: The Arc US has been experiencing technical difficulties with the one-click today. If it's not linking to your representatives, please check back tomorrow and call your representatives in the morning!
House Republican Members Decry Senate Reconciliation Bill
Last week, sixteen Members of Congress who helped secure a Republican majority to pass H.R. 1, also known as the Big Beautiful Bill, sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune criticizing the Senate’s current proposal.
New York Congress Members Garbarino, Malliotakis, and Lawler were among the signatories. They noted that the Medicaid cuts and policy changes in the Senate bill go too far. The group also, “…affirmed [their] commitment to ensuring that reductions in federal spending do not come at the expense of our most vulnerable constituents.” They closed the letter by stating, “…we cannot support a final bill that threatens access to coverage or jeopardizes the stability of our hospitals and providers.”
However, we know the provisions in the Senate bill are based on the foundation laid by the House. As the bill now returns to the House, we must remind them of the the claims and commitments they have made, and hold them to their word. You can read the full letter here.
