Webinar: Why Everybody Talks About Transportation Safety, But Nobody Does Anything About It
Date: January 27, 2016
Time: 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm ET
Cost: Free
Organization: Community Builders
In the next webinar in our ongoing transportation series, Jim Charlier will use his decoder ring to open up the secret chamber of transportation safety facts, data and trends.  Are five-lane streets dangerous?  Is it accurate to assume congestion relief improves traffic safety?  Why do some state Departments of Transportation say they care about safety, but support raising highway speed limits?  Who keeps track of safety data and why is data on local accident trends so hard to find?  Are pedestrians and bicyclists over-represented in accident statistics?  Do protected bike lanes make sense as safety improvement projects?  These are important questions that we need answers for if we are going to reduce injuries and fatalities.  Jim will examine the influence that land use context, facility design and regulations have on traveler safety, and will identify strategies that local governments and local advocacy groups could use to track and report safety facts.

Webinar: Making the Case for Parks and Trails
Date: January 28, 2016
Time: 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm ET
Cost: Free members/ $45 non-members
Organization: Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals (SORP)
To reverse the global epidemic of physical inactivity that is responsible for more than 5 million deaths per year, many groups recommend creating "activity-friendly environments." This webinar will highlight results from an extensive exploration of scientific and "gray" literature, which was conducted to understand the co-benefits of activity-friendly environments on physical health, mental health, social benefits, safety/injury prevention, environmental sustainability, and economics. Five settings that relate to physical activity in communities were defined for the non-systematic literature review: parks/trails, urban design, transportation, schools, and workplaces/buildings. This webinar will focus on parks and trails, which had "good" to "strong" evidence of all 6 co-benefits. A presentation of the biggest needle-movers, quick wins, replicable case studies and additional resources from Active Living Research will provide webinar participants with the tools that they need to make the case for parks and trails.

Webinar: Development of Pedestrian Demand Estimation Tool
Date: February 18, 2016
Time: 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm ET
Cost: Free
Organization: National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC)
A new predictive tool for estimating pedestrian demand has potential applications for improving walkability. By forecasting the number, location and characteristics of walking trips, this tool allows for policy-sensitive mode shifts away from automobile travel.

There is growing support to improve the quality of the walking environment and make investments to promote pedestrian travel. Despite this interest and need, current forecasting tools, particularly regional travel demand models, often fall short. To address this gap, Oregon Metro and NITC researcher Kelly Clifton worked together to develop this pedestrian demand estimation tool which can allow planners to allocate infrastructure based on pedestrian demand in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. The tool is also designed to be replicable, so that other metropolitan areas can adapt the model to begin estimating pedestrian demand in their cities.

This webinar will provide an overview of how the tool functions as well as a framework for applying this method in other cities.
