As a generous local organization, B'nai Brith Calgary Lodge 816 continues to serve and contribute leadership and resources to enhance the Jewish community and broader Calgary. Mazel tov to the new executive led by Darren Bondar as president. Darren has been immersed in our Jewish community through his entire life, attending Hebrew school and graduating from IL Peretz. He had his bar mitzah and married his nursery school sweetheart at the Beth Tzedec, and just two years ago, proudly watched his own son have his bar mitzah there. Darren was a camper, staff member, director, treasurer, and board chair of Camp BB Riback, and has been both the treasurer and board chair of the Calgary JCC. Mazel tov to the rest of the executive: Sam Feldman (vice president), Stacy Shaikin (treasurer), Perry Feldman (secretary), Joel Zimmerman (Warden). Thank you to Dr. Robert Barsky and Mr. Harold Lipton who have worked tirelessly for the organization for over a decade with a focus on making a difference and ensuring agencies receive the support they require to provide their meaningful services and programs.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) joined with B'nai Brith Canada and Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) in expressing deep disappointment with the Canadian government's decision to vote in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution that affirms Palestinian self-determination, while failing to affirm Jewish self-determination in the indigenous and ancestral homeland of the Jewish people, intentionally erasing historical Jewish connections to Jerusalem – including the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site. Shabbat Shalom!
