Seven seniors were recognized as Scholars by College Bound Opportunities (CBO), which aims to motivate and prepare under-served students to attend and graduate from college. This year's graduating CBO Scholars are:

Northern Illinois Regional Art Exhibition
Five students from Deerfield High School and five students from Highland Park High School had their artwork featured at the Northern Illinois Regional Exhibition, which is one of Illinois’ largest and most influential student art exhibitions that celebrates artistic achievement and provides talented young artists with opportunities to showcase their artwork and compete at the state level.

Amy Burke, a junior at Deerfield High School, earned Bronze in the photography category, Ariel Glassberg, a junior at Highland Park high School, earned Gold in the pottery category and Rhone Tatham, a senior at Deerfield High School, earned Honorable Mention in the drawing category.

Staff Highlights
Below are some of the honors and accomplishments our staff have earned during the spring semester.

  • Deerfield High School received a Recognition of Excellence designation from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) for its efforts in supporting students and families through the financial aid process.

  • Nicole Keith, girls varsity basketball coach at Deerfield High School, earned the 2022 Coach of the Year Award from the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) for Class 3A. This was Keith’s first season coaching at Deerfield High School, and she coached the team to a Super Sixteen (sectional finals) finish.

  • Britnee Kenyon, theater director at Deerfield High School, was selected as a finalist for the 2022 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Kenyon was among 30 teachers to be selected as Finalists for this prestigious award.


  • Jaime Stasiorowski, science teacher at Deerfield High School, was named a Semi-Finalist for the 2022-23 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship (AEF) Program. The AEF Program supports the intellectual and professional development of K-12 STEM teachers who have the desire to share their education and classroom expertise with federal agencies and U.S. Congressional offices.

  • The business and finance department earned the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting (COE), which is a prestigious achievement from the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) for its high-quality Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for Fiscal Year 2021. This is District 113's 30th consecutive COE from ASBO.

  • Steve Winiecki, science teacher and head varsity football coach at Deerfield High School, has been inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association's (IHSFCA) Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022.

  • Deerfield High School's Robotics Team (CogChamp) won the Design Award at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge Illinois State Championship. The CogChamp robotics team members include:

  • Cole Gawin, a junior at Deerfield High School, took second place in the 2021 10th District Congressional App Challenge. Gawin’s app, “Well: Reboot Your Mindset,” challenges users to improve their productivity and long-term happiness.



  • Varun Goel, a senior at Deerfield High School, was selected as a Regional Finalist by the Coca-Cola Scholarship Foundation. Goel is one of 251 students from across the country to be selected as a Regional Finalist. The Coca-Cola Scholars Program is the largest corporate-sponsored, achievement-based scholarship program in the United States. Goel is also a National Merit Scholarships Program winner and a U.S. Presidential Scholarship Program semifinalist.

  • Nine students from Highland Park High School that make up the Rust in Piece robotics team won the Winning Alliance - Captain award at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge Illinois State Championship and advanced to the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship. At the world championships, the team was a Design Award Finalist. The Rust in Piece robotics team members include:

  • Evan Morris, a senior at Deerfield High School, placed seventh at the IHSA 3A Track and Field State Meet in the 800 meter run.

  • Calvin Pickop, a junior at Highland Park High School, placed third at the IHSA eSports tournament in the Super Smash Bros. Singles category.



  • Danny Castle - ninth in the 200 Meter Free Relay
  • Noam Kulbak - fifth in 1 Meter Diving
  • Ethan Noffsinger - ninth in the 200 Meter Free Relay
  • Kevin Obochi - sixth in the 100 Meter Butterfly, ninth in the 200 Meter Free Relay
  • Alp Ozdaryal - ninth in the 200 Meter Free Relay

  • The boys tennis team at Highland Park High School finished sixth at the IHSA 2A state tournament with a total of 19 points. Congratulations to the following individuals who competed:

  • The boys wrestling team at Deerfield High School took second place at the IHSA state finals had seven students compete at the IHSA 2A individual state finals. Congratulations to the following individuals:

  • Aiden Cohen placed fifth in the 170 weight class competition
  • Lucio Morgan placed fifth in the 145 weight class competition
  • Renzo Morgan placed sixth in the 132 weight class competition
  • Kai Neumark placed second in the 138 weight class competition
  • Luke Reddy placed eighth in the 113 weight class competition
  • Benjamin Shvartsman placed first in the 160 weight class competition
  • Stamos Tsakiris placed sixth in the 152 weight class competition


  • The Deerfield High School Academic Challenge team placed fifth at the 2022 Academic Challenge Competition held at Eastern Illinois University. Congratulations to the team and following students on this accomplishment:

  • Will Ballis - fifth place in engineering graphics
  • Samantha Gass - second place in English
  • Varun Goel - third place in chemistry
  • Tim Nagel - fourth place in English
  • Madeline Trella - second place in biology
  • Yaokai Yang - first place in computer science 


  • Three students from Deerfield High School were selected to the Class 3A All-State Team by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA). Congratulations to the following students on this accomplishment:

  • Aubrey Galvan - Third Team All State
  • Lexi Kerstein - Second Team All State
  • Nikki Kerstein - Special Mention

  • Two students were selected as Semifinalist for the 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The Presidential Scholarship Program recognizes and honors some of the nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Congratulations to the following students on this accomplishment:

  • Mac Nanberg, a senior at Highland Park High School, was awarded the Evans Scholarship, which is a full housing and tuition college grant for golf caddies. The Evans Scholarship is the nation’s largest scholarship program for caddies.

  • Charlie Robin, a sophomore at Deerfield High School, and Andrew Rodgers, a freshman at Deerfield High School, have been named to the U16 Boys Basketball Team for Team USA and will compete at the 2022 Maccabiah Games in Israel, which is the largest Jewish international sports tournament.

  • The Deerfield High School Girls Soccer Team is headed to state today. We wish them well this weekend!
