April 2025 Newsletter

Spring is here, and while April showers usually bring growth, this year they’ve also brought unexpected challenges. Recent federal funding cuts have left us facing a critical gap — but your continued support is what helps us keep babies safe, families supported, and hope alive. Because of you, over 960 babies and their caregivers have received the care they need and the compassion they deserve. We're doing everything we can to stretch resources and stay focused on the families who count on us. Thank you for standing with us through every season — your belief in our mission means more than ever.

Tara

To moms who are struggling, Alexys offers this heartfelt advice, "Have confidence in yourself, in the future mother you're about to become. The love you will come to know will ultimately make you an amazing mother, friend, and above all, woman."

A Mother's Strength: Alexys' Story

When Alexys first heard about Hushabye Nursery through her methadone clinic, she had no idea how deeply the experience would transform her life. If asked to sum it up in just one word, she says simply: love.

With courage and commitment, Alexys began her journey to healing—one that not only impacted her, but her entire family. “I’m most proud that, with the help of Hushabye, I was able to get my DCS cases dismissed within a couple of months,” she shares. “I learned how much I'm able to accomplish with the right support systems in place, and with people who truly want to see me and my family thrive..”

That support didn’t stop at the doors of the nursery. When her son was born, a visit from Tara brought comfort and connection during an emotional and vulnerable time. “It meant a lot to us,” Alexys recalls. “The support you all have offered us, even after birth, has been absolutely amazing. We’re so blessed to be part of this program.”

At Hushabye Nursery, stories like Alexys’ remind us why we do what we do. Every family has a past—but more importantly, every family deserves a future filled with hope, healing, and love.

Volunteer Spotlight

Carol & David Muggeridge

Spreading Hope, One Swaddle at a Time

At Hushabye Nursery, our volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission, and few embody that spirit more than Carol and David Muggeridge. For the past two years, they've shown up week after week with a deep commitment to helping babies and families thrive.

"There is so much hope and love in the building," Carol shares. “The enthusiasm and spirit of everyone I meet—from nurses to PCAs to AmeriCorps volunteers—is infectious. Everyone is so dedicated. I love being part of something so impactful.”

For Carol, the most rewarding part of volunteering goes beyond the snuggles and soft cries of newborns. It’s the people. “Of course, the babies! But I also love hearing everyone’s story. Meeting moms, dads, aunties, and grandparents is so fun. And I LOVE that the nurses are so willing to teach me."

Volunteering at Hushabye has had a lasting impact on Carol and David’s lives. “It brings me great joy. My volunteer time is a highlight of my week,” Carol says.

When asked to describe Hushabye in three words, Carol didn’t hesitate: “Hushabye performs miracles.”

And we couldn't agree more. Carol and David, thank you for sharing your hearts and hands with us. You remind us that every act of love creates a ripple.

April 21-27 is Volunteer Appreciation Week. We rely on our volunteers to help provide the one-to-one care that is vital to the recovery of infants experiencing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Our volunteers are trained through the Eat, Sleep, and Console treatment program that is at the heart of the services we provide. Volunteers complete trauma-informed training before their service in the nursery.

Dave earned the nickname "Dave the Fav" because he is the resident handyman. But when there is nothing that needs his attention, he will snuggle babies. "One time I got a fussy baby to settle down, and Morgan called me a 'baby whisperer."

Getting Help

Think about a time you wanted to complete a task. Maybe it was lifting a heavy piece of furniture up the stairs. Physically, you knew you couldn't do it alone, and mentally, you didn't want to call a friend to come over to help you... again.

The call for help is often the hardest thing to do. Once you do it, you think, 'why didn't I ask sooner?'

Now, imagine having a substance abuse issue and asking a friend or family member to help you. Much harder than asking to move furniture.

Educating ourselves about all sides of substance abuse helps us to understand the helping role we can play in a person's life who is struggling.

If you or someone you love struggles, start by understanding then asking for help becomes easier.
