This Fourth of July, we’re reminded that true freedom is found in healing — in babies who are safely held, in parents who are given a second chance, and in families who rise together. At Hushabye Nursery, every tiny cry, every quiet moment of comfort, is a firework of hope bursting against the odds. You help make that possible. Your support lights the path for change, compassion, and brighter futures.
As temperatures soar outside, our hearts stay full and our nursery stays cool, calm, and filled with love. Thank you for standing with us in this mission, especially when the world feels heavy and the heat is high.

One especially meaningful part of volunteering is supporting parents. “I love when I get to hold a baby while the mom or dad is in the room. It’s such a vulnerable time for them—adjusting, healing, and finding their rhythm. If I can be a fresh set of arms, give them a short break, or help them feel supported, it means everything.”
When asked to describe Hushabye Nursery, Dana used these three words: rewarding, caring, and impactful.

“What keeps me coming back each week is simple: spending time with the babies. That’s ultimately the bottom line.”
For Dana, each visit is a chance to offer love, comfort, and support—not just to the babies, but to the whole community. “I believe it’s a team approach at Hushabye. Everyone has their role to play to keep the nursery running and to help families. It’s inspiring to be a part of it.”
Evening shifts bring a special rhythm. “I always look forward to arriving and seeing which babies are there that night—especially if I recognize one I’ve held before. Watching their progress from those fragile early days to the moment they’re ready to go home is incredibly rewarding.”
The learning and growth never stop. “The nurses and staff are always helpful in explaining the babies’ needs. From my first day to now, I’ve grown so much in confidence—learning how to feed, soothe, and support each baby’s unique needs.”
Dana's care continues outside the nursery. “I also enjoy sewing and have made some burp cloths and swaddle blankets at home to donate to the nursery. It’s just another way I can give a little comfort to the babies and support the families who need it most.”

When Karen first heard about us, she was in the middle of one of the hardest chapters of her life. Struggling with fear, uncertainty, and substance use during pregnancy, she was searching for hope, but unsure where to find it.
“I first learned about Hushabye through my insurance case manager,” Karen shared. “She was trying to help me find a safe place and support for my unborn baby. She encouraged me to go to the hospital to safely detox and start methadone treatment. That’s when I started hearing about Hushabye again. I was still hesitant and scared. But something told me to make the call. And I’m so thankful I did.”
That first call was the beginning of a transformation.

“From the very beginning, everyone was so kind and compassionate. They supported me throughout the rest of my pregnancy, encouraging me every step of the way. Before Hushabye, I felt so alone and completely helpless. But they gave me a path forward. Even now, I’m still connected. I attend groups and meet with my peer support every month. They’ve helped me through some of the hardest times this past year.”
Today, Karen and Noah are together safe at home, building a future, a future she once couldn’t imagine. “Hushabye was the biggest blessing. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.”
Karen is also carrying forward the lessons she’s learned, preparing to share them with her son as he grows. “When he’s older, I’ll remind him how deeply he is loved and how much he was wanted. I’ll teach him always to be kind and to do the right thing, even when no one’s watching. And I’ll tell him the truth about drugs—how dangerous they are—and that he can come to me about anything. I will always be there for him.”
This is what Hushabye Nursery is all about—meeting families in their hardest moments, wrapping them in care, and walking beside them toward a brighter beginning.

Helping Hushabye Matters
Every day, babies in Arizona are born into the unimaginable — withdrawal from substances they were exposed to before birth. At Hushabye Nursery, we believe no baby should suffer alone, and no family should walk this journey without support. That’s where we come in. And that’s where you come in, too.
We're filling a gap that no one else is. Hushabye is the only facility of its kind in the country — a 12-bed nursery dedicated to treating Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) in a compassionate, family-centered way. We care for both babies and the parents who love them, even when life has been anything but easy.
For the next several months, we'll educate on the WHY of Hushabye Nursery.

Hushabye Nursery's World Changer for July is Jenelle Edwards. Not only is Jenelle a joy to work with, but she's also amazing at her job. Recently, she stepped up as a leader in the Patient Care Associates after switching roles from her previous volunteer position. She improved the inpatient inventory process, ensuring that we always have the necessary items.
One of her co-workers commented, "Jenelle is always so kind, compassionate, and loving toward staff, babies, and families. She is a beautiful soul and is one of the best co-workers you could have."
Thanks, Jenelle, for your hard work and dedication!
