When it comes to stress-inducing events, moving ranks right up there with tax audits and root canals. As you read this, I am getting ready to move again -- only two years after the last move. What the heck is wrong with me? And why can't I stay in one place?
I really thought the last move was truly my last. I have been working on retirement planning for the last few years and had put myself into a perfect situation -- very low mortgage, low HOA, fixed utility costs. The goal was to be able to live off my social security if/when it came to that and then any retirement savings would be for 'extras' (like traveling).
So what happened to upend these carefully laid plans? I got a boyfriend. And one that has lasted. We're at the 2-½ year mark and I believe we're in this for the long haul, but suddenly my little slice of heaven is not quite big enough.
So we bought a new house -- much bigger and in a lovely community -- still in Palm Desert thankfully, but now we have to move (again).
Here's the good news -- I am an expert packer
and can count on one hand the number of things lost or broken in all the nearly 30 moves of my life. The bad news? I am older now and the thought of moving is no longer exciting.
Who wants to pack? Especially for a short haul move! Egad.... The new house is less than 5 miles from here.
Fortunately, we here at Executive Errands® work with a great moving company who does all sorts of moving -- we move furniture to consignment for our clients. We move furniture from one room to another for our clients. And we move people from one home to another.
The great thing about our movers is, not only are they insured (because they must be to work with us) but they have never (knock on wood) damaged anything in any of these moves.
That still doesn't help with packing so I will likely enlist our own people to help. We do that too -- not sure you knew that? Mostly we help people unpack which is way more fun -- it's always like Christmas opening all those boxes -- but we can pack too.
Lately we've been helping clients move into new homes while they aren't here -- that's right! They aren't even here! Last week we received a layout and photos of furniture from one of our clients.
We spoke with the designer, then met the delivery people and set all the furniture in place, opened all the boxes, washed all the dishes and linens and then put everything away. The next time that client comes into town; his home will be all ready to enjoy! It really was a fun day!
Sometimes we help clients downsize to a smaller home or sometimes we help them eliminate all their no longer wanted items once they've sold their home (but haven't bought another locally).
That's always fun too. We go through the home, help the client decide what goes to consignment, donated or discarded. It's like one of those redecorating shows on HGTV!
It seems many clients are remodeling these days rather than moving. We have been painting, refinishing furniture, doing a wide range of handyman work, the list goes on and on. In our next issue we'll share some of the special projects we've been doing of late.
