Javier La Fontaine
DPM, MS, FACPM, FACFAS
Appointed Dean

Dr. La Fontaine has been appointed the inaugural dean of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Podiatric Medicine (SOPM), effective July 1, 2022.
Javier La Fontaine, DPM, MS, was a professor in the Plastic Surgery Department at UT Southwestern and is an attending physician at Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas, TX. He specializes in limb salvage, using his surgical and wound healing expertise to help patients—especially those with diabetes.

Originally hailing from Puerto Rico, Dr. La Fontaine earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. He earned his DPM degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1995 and completed his residency in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1999.

He has been widely published, holds leadership roles in multiple professional societies and has been named one of the “Most Influential 175 Podiatrists in the US” by Podiatry Magazine.
Jarrod Shapiro
DPM, FACPM, FACFAS, FFPM RCPS (Glasg.) Appointed Professor

Dr. Shapiro has been promoted to Professor of Podiatric Medicine, Surgery & Biomechanics at the WesternU College of Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Shapiro is an ACPM board member, clinical podiatrist, teacher, residency program director of the Chino Valley Medical Center program, and writer. He is a fellow of the American College of Podiatric Medicine and American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

Dr. Shapiro is an advocate for proper treatment of podiatrists to match their their education, training, and experience; he is excited to see the future potential for a plenary license that would give podiatrists a seat at the political table with our allopathic and osteopathic colleagues. He would also like to see continued improvement in podiatric education with a national movement toward a more equivalent education between podiatric students and those in the MD and DO community.
