It's been a difficult 72ish hours for so many. I've checked in with some of you while others of you have reached out to me. The shock of the vote going the way it did. The concerns for our sisters, our trans siblings, our foreign siblings, and so many social issues as people envision what President Trump's policies will be enacted after the start of the year.
The question most asked: how do I/we move forward, as Christians, when so many people in our country - at least based on the popular vote - do not want to care for "the last, the lost, and the least"?
A friend sent me a Facebook post that, I think, summarizes well a recommendation of a way forward. The post, authored by Venice Williams, is as follows:
You are awakening to the
same country you fell asleep to.
The very same country.
Pull yourself together.
And,
when you see me,
do not ask me
"What do we do now?
How do we get through the next four years?"
Some of my Ancestors dealt with
at least 400 years of this
under worse conditions.
Continue to do the good work.
Continue to build bridges not walls.
Continue to lead with compassion.
Continue the demanding work
of liberation for all.
Continue to dismantle broken systems,
large and small.
Continue to set the best example
for the children.
Continue to be a vessel of nourishing joy.
Continue right where you are.
Right where you live into your days.
Do so in the name of
The Creator who expects
nothing less from each of us.
And if you are not "continuing"
ALL of the above,
in community, partnership, collaboration?
What is it you have been doing?
What is it you are waiting for?
We work together.
We care for each other.
We serve as Christ's hands and feet, connecting with people who show need.
This Sunday, members of our Fellowship Family will head downtown with Mary's Blessing Bags and some food items for those who need it. If you're interested in joining them, please contact Mimi Carter. On the 24th after worship, we will meet in the Fellowship Hall not only to prepare for Advent with our annual workshop, but will also pack meals for twelve refugee families in our community.
This Sunday, we will continue with our Stewardship & Generosity Season but also not ignore the feelings of many in the room. How do we "Do Unto Others" in the midst of mixed feelings?
