Funding Opportunities from the European Research Council

Opportunities for Non-European Researchers

The European Research Council (ERC) is a funding organisation for frontier research. It aims to stimulate scientific excellence in Europe by funding the very best, creative researchers of any nationality and age, and supporting their innovative ideas. More information for non-European researchers.

  • Synergy Grant: Are you a researcher who wants to address a research problem so ambitious that it can not be dealt with by you and your team alone? The Synergy Grants could be for you!
  • Horizon Europe Grant: This funding mechanism is designed to support public health research that supports the health of EU citizens and beyond. Topics include antibiotic-resistant bacteria, developing novel proteins to prevent potential epidemic diseases, using AI to support pandemic preparedness, strengthening health systems to promote health equity, supporting global research collaboration, and much more.

Looking for Industry Funding Opportunities? Join the EMERGE project!

The EMERGE project is always bringing on new funding opportunities, and funding applications are always coming online. We encourage you to join Halo by creating a free Halo account.

Here are quick answers to common questions:

1.) Who is eligible to submit proposals?

  • Unless stated otherwise in the RFP, principal investigators, postdocs, PhD students, startup companies, and other non-university entrepreneurs/researchers in any country are all eligible to submit proposals.

2.) Do proposals require confidential information?

  • No, only non-confidential information is permitted in proposals submitted on Halo. The scientist, university and sponsor are free to discuss confidentiality and sponsored research agreements off of Halo as they normally would.

3.) How long does it take to complete a proposal?

  • There is a single, standardized proposal on Halo and it takes most scientists less than an hour to complete. The average time is 45 minutes.

FY25 Department of Navy (DON) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education and Workforce Program

The Naval STEM Coordination Office (NSCO) is inviting a wide range of applications aimed at enhancing existing solutions or developing innovative approaches to maintain and cultivate a world-class Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. This workforce is essential for preserving the technological superiority of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

The proposed projects should focus on creating, enhancing, or sustaining educational pathways and workforce opportunities in STEM fields for U.S. citizens, particularly in areas relevant to the Department of the Navy (DON) science and technology.

The Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) encourages initiatives that strengthen the capacity of educational systems and local communities to provide impactful STEM learning experiences for students of all ages, as well as for the naval-related workforce. Learn more here.

Bridge Funding Available for Foundations Across the Country

While we hope that no scholars at ISU will need this type of funding, it is available and the Office for Research Development can work with PIs as needed. The current deadlines are May 30 and June 13, 2025.

"In the face of recent abrupt shifts in federal funding for education research, including large-scale terminations of National Science Foundation (NSF) research grant awards, we have developed a rapid response bridge grant opportunity for impacted scholars, in collaboration with The Kapor Foundation, The William T. Grant Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation." Learn more here.

Stephen I. Katz Early Stage Investigator Research Project Grant (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

The Stephen I. Katz Early Stage Investigator Research Project Grant supports an innovative project that represents a change in research direction for an early stage investigator (ESI) and for which no preliminary data exist. Applications submitted to this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) must not include preliminary data. Applications must include a separate attachment describing the change in research direction. Upcoming due dates: September 26th, 2025, January 27th, 2026, May 27th, 2026. Learn more here.

Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Promoting Language and Communication in Minimally Verbal/Non-Speaking Individuals with Autism

The purpose of this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is to encourage applications for research to promote language and communication in autistic individuals who are minimally verbal/non-speaking. Further research is needed to evaluate and tailor existing interventions, develop novel interventions, develop and apply new research designs and methods to intervention efforts, and identify meaningful outcome measures.

Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI)

The Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI) program seeks to enable funding opportunities that are flexible and responsive to the evolving and emerging needs in cyberinfrastructure (CI). The program continues to emphasize integrated CI services, quantitative metrics with targets for delivery and usage of these services, and community creation.

The CSSI program anticipates three classes of awards:

  • Elements: These awards target small groups that will create and deploy robust services for which there is a demonstrated need, and that will advance one or more significant areas of science and engineering.
  • Framework Implementations: These awards target larger, interdisciplinary teams organized around the development and application of services aimed at solving common research problems faced by NSF researchers in one or more areas of science and engineering, and resulting in a sustainable community framework providing CI services to a diverse community or communities.
  • Transition to Sustainability: These awards target groups who would like to execute a well-defined sustainability plan for existing CI with demonstrated impact in one or more areas of science and engineering supported by NSF. The sustainability plan should enable new avenues of support for the long-term sustained impact of the CI.
