Don't Cut the Cord! Have your Air Gap and Get Your Data, Too!
Rockwell Automation recently advised customers to disconnect their internet-facing industrial control system devices amid cyber threats. This guidance comes not long after a series of cybersecurity advisories for Rockwell products put out by the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Rockwell, to their credit, has been very forthcoming with information when these vulnerabilities are identified, and this most recent set of CVEs join a growing list of ICS advisories that highlight the challenges faced by operators of critical infrastructure.
CISA's recommended mitigations are often to "minimize network exposure for all control system devices" and to "isolate them from business networks," but does that mean operators need to cut the cord and to go without the critical data feeds they need for resilient operation? No, there is an alternative: operational technology (OT) data diodes, which provide key system performance data, log files, and other critical information in a physically-enforced, one-way fashion. With Fend data diodes, you can air gap your network, shielding vulnerable OT systems from cyberattack, while still getting real-time outbound data feeds.
