Sonoma County Maternal Child and Adolescent Health

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

We've just completed Birth Defects Awareness Month,

but FASD needs it's own day here in Sonoma County.

Perhaps not surprisingly, our birthing community reports more alcohol use than the national average.

In 2019, 1,063 Sonoma County perinatal persons were screened for alcohol use with the Integrated Screening Tool

20% reported alcohol use in the past month

about twice the national average

The message is simple:

There is no "safe" amount of alcohol to consume while pregnant- all types of alcohol (even wine) are equally dangerous during pregnancy

Any alcohol use during pregnancy can cause birth defects and developmental challenges known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs)

Based on NIH community studies, FASD in the United States may affect 1-5% of schoolchildren.

The annual cost of FASD: over $4 billion
