Few recommend municipality as place to do business: ACC survey
EDMONTON — A recent Alberta Chambers of Commerce (ACC) survey shows only 17 per cent of business operators would recommend their municipality as a place to set up a business or invest, resulting in an overall net promoter score of –39 for Alberta municipalities.
Few business operators recommend their municipality as a place to set up a business or invest for a net promoter score of –39, a seven-point drop from 2019.
This net promoter score (NPS) represented a seven-point drop from 2019, where survey respondents assigned Alberta municipalities a NPS of –32. ACC President and CEO Ken Kobly says this may indicate the business community's general dissatisfaction with Alberta's municipal response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"These data—gathered in November 2020, several months into the COVID-19 pandemic—strongly suggest Alberta's business operators are dissatisfied with the local government response to the unprecedented challenges they are facing," says Kobly. "Ahead of this fall's municipal elections, it's critical for municipal leaders to adopt concrete strategies to support job creators in their communities. Given the tremendous pressures facing business and municipal leaders alike, it's crucial for these two groups to collaborate and find ways to best support their communities."

To calculate this net promoter score, the ACC asked business operators how likely they were, on a scale of 0 to 10, to recommend setting up a business or investing in the municipality where their business operates. Based on these responses, the number of detractors (0 to 6 responses) were then subtracted from the number of promoters (9 to 10) for an overall NPS. Passive responses (7 to 8) do not impact the score one way or the other.
