Do you have a knitting or needlework project that has been sitting around waiting for you to finish it? Join Beth Hartke to work on that neglected piece or start a new one and enjoy the company of others with NO modern-day intrusions. Registration is required, since space is limited. Admission is free.

Higganum Feed Store Exhibit is up until the end of April

Please drop by during museum hours to view our current exhibit on the Higganum Feed Store. At our opening reception on Sunday, January 26 we welcomed a number of family members including granddaughters, Bette Flynn and Joan Dickinson; niece, Ann Huffstetler and former daughter-in-law, Jane Goodell. Appointments also available.

Antiques Show

The 47 th Annual Connecticut Spring Antiques Show

HARTFORD: The Connecticut Spring Antiques Show returns to the landmark Hartford Armory on March 21 and March 22, 2020 and will feature a mix of antiques, fine and decorative arts offered by the most distinguished antiques and art dealers in the country. The show, which is known for its high quality and unsurpassed early Americana, will also showcase a more diverse selection of artifacts including fine art, garden embellishments and folk art.
This year the Antiques Show will feature presentations, educational exhibits and expert workshops on historic home preservation.
Qualified restoration vendors with special expertise on maintaining antique homes will present and be available to answer homeowners’ questions.

The show hours are Saturday, March 21 from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday, March 22 from 11 am to 4 pm at the Hartford Armory, 360 Broad Street, Hartford. Admission is $15 and parking is free. The Armory’s Officers Club caterers our onsite café with a full luncheon menu and snacks. On Sunday, March 22 visitors age 35 are free.

Haddam Shad Museum
The Haddam Historical Society is thrilled to announce that the organization has been working with Dr. Joseph Zaientz of Haddam Neck to continue operating the Haddam Shad Museum for generations to come.

It was important for Dr. Zaientz to keep the museum in Haddam and the historical society is honored to carry on his hard work and legacy in preserving the museum and telling the important story of shad’s role in the Connecticut River Valley. The society has recently catalogued the items in the museum and will assist Dr. Zaientz with museum operations, events and programs in the 2020 season. 

We thank Dr. Zaientz for amassing such an extensive collection of items, archives, videos and objects important to our region’s heritage and allowing the society to preserve, collect, interpret and promote the museum for all to enjoy. The Haddam Shad Museum will be open on Sunday’s from 10 am to 3 pm April 5 to June 14, 2020. The Museum is located at 212 Saybrook Road in Higganum, CT.

Haddam Historical Society announces Scholarship Applications now available!

The Haddam Historical Society is pleased to announce it is again offering a $500 scholarship to a resident of Haddam, Higganum, or Haddam Neck and senior student at Haddam-Killingworth High School. The application and instructions forms are available at the Haddam-Killingworth High School Guidance Office.

Scholarship chairman, Susann Costa, notes that the 2019 award will be the 7 th consecutive year the Haddam Historical Society has bestowed an award and is delighted to be able to help support the continued education of a deserving student and advocate for the importance of history both locally and globally.
Volunteers Wanted!

The Haddam Historical Society has a number of volunteer opportunities available.

Antiques Show:
We have slots left to volunteer at our Antiques Show in Hartford on March 21 and 22. In addition we could always use more help in planning and executing the show which celebrates its 47 th year in 2020.

Programs Committee:
We are looking for volunteers to join our Programs Committee and help coordinate and run our adult educational programs including Old House Enthusiasts Group, lectures, and local walking tours.

Events/Social Committee:
We are looking for volunteers to assist at our fundraising events including our popular Croquet and Chardonnay, house tours and social events.

Collections Crew:
We are also looking for volunteers to help with our ever -growing collections of paper, photos and objects. This includes reviewing, researching and cataloging the many wonderful items that are donated to us every year. We have a museum database which makes accessioning and archiving a fun and rewarding experience. Training will be available.
