January 2019

Have you resolved to make a change in the new year? Many of us start the year with big ambitions for total makeovers.  Here are some ideas for small ways to make a difference in 2019:
Walk 5 more steps each day.
Clean out a junk drawer.
Finish that UFO.
Try a new recipe using fresh produce.
Pay it backward (pay for the order for the person behind you in the drive-through line).
Sing more.
Smile more.
Volunteer at a food pantry.
Read something out of your norm.
Learn a new skill.
Join a club.
Whatever the new leaf you turn in 2019, we hope it is bright and fulfilling. And if it involves yarn, even better!

Ready to Learn to Knit?  Join Joan to master the basics in 3 sessions January 5, 7, and 8 at 3:00 p.m. each day.  Cast on, knit, purl and bind off - everything you need for a great first project.  The class fee is $45. Bring size 7 or 8 needles or purchase them at the shop before the first class.  We'll provide the learning yarn.

Next Steps in Knitting - Once you've mastered the knit and purl stitches, you're ready for increases and decreases.  The Reyna Shawl, one of the most popular free patterns on Ravelry, is a great next project.  We'll practice right and left leaning increases and decreases and get you started on this.  Bring a size 4 circular needle, 32" length is preferred, and stitch markers.  The class is FREE with the purchase of
1 ball of Debbie Bliss Rialto Sock or Cascade Heritage Wave. Joan offers this class January 5 at noon.

Sock Club will meet January 4, 18 and 25 - no meeting on January 11.  Let's resolve to try a new sock technique this year!  Drop in around 3:00 on Fridays and share your current project with the hive!

On Thursday, January 17th Judy will help you get started on a beautiful but easy scarf/wrap using size 9 needles and Sirdar's Hayfield Spirit
self striping yarn.  This scarf looks difficult, but it is so easy you will be finished before you know it.  Basic knitting skills required, kf&b, k2tog, ssk and knit stitch. Easy peasy!  $40 includes pattern, yarn, and instructions.

Spinning Day is January 19!  Bring your wheel or spindle and share with the hive!  We get together once a month to learn from each other, enjoy refreshments and a laugh or two.

Get hooked on crochet!  Crocheted fabric is created by pulling one loop through another, one at a time.  Jessica will get you started with BEGINNING CROCHET  January 19 at noon.  Class fee is $20. Bring a size G or H hook or purchase one at the shop prior to class. We provide learning yarn.  In this class you'll learn at least 3 stitches and be ready to start your first project.   Have you mastered the basics and want to learn more? INTERMEDIATE CROCHET comes next, at 1:30 that same day!  Class fee is $20 and bring the same hook.  Its probably not a good idea to do them both on the same day if you've never crocheted before.

Wet Felted Lattice Scarf  January 19 at noon.  No stitching required!  Created your woven lattice work, then learn the art of wet felting!  Materials fee of $21.00 includes enough BlueFaced Leicester wool to create TWO scarves and bubble wrap.  No class fee!  This is a fun and easy skill that will result in a finished scarf in about an hour, and is suitable for ages 8 and up (under 14 must be accompanied by an adult).

Ready to try double pointed needles to knit in the round?  Here's a great first project!  We'll make simple fingerless mitts using size 7 DPN's and worsted weight yarn.  This class is FREE with the purchase of 2 balls of Liberty Wool worsted weight superwash wool yarn.  Bring your needles and a stitch marker and join Joan on January 24 at 3:00 p.m.

Needle Tatting is an old-fashioned way to make lace and Penny will teach you how!  Sit with Penny on January 26 at 2:00 and learn some of the basics.  Class fee is $20, plus the cost of materials ($12 for needle and thread kit).

Have you registered yet for Pins & Needles 2019?  Many classes are filling up, so don't delay.  Want a get away weekend with no obligations? Select the no-classes registration and just come for the party.  Seriously, many people come just to enjoy the company of fellow yarn and fiber friends.  Need to renew your relationship with your sewing machine?  We have a great track for that, too, with fun projects to build your skills.

Pins & Needles Retreat dates are February 1 - 3, 2019 at the Historic Boone Tavern.  This link will give you all the pertinent information:
