Dear Audible,
I feel torn writing this, because we've had so many good times. We've been through so much together. I really mean that. Remember that road trip to Minneapolis, where we drove through the night, and you helped keep me awake? And those early mornings at the gym on the elliptical with the sounds of my favorite authors and stories? I will always cherish those times. I want you to know that.
But there are some things that have been bothering me for a long time. I didn't say anything, because it didn't seem as though there was anything that could be done to change them. After all, you're a part of Amazon, and it wouldn't have been fair for me to think that you could be something that you're not. But then I found someone else, someone who shares so many of the same interests as me. Someone that fits me better than you do.
Don't get me wrong, you're impressive. I can buy almost anything from you guys. At first you were really into books, but then you took on the world, and it seems like that has worked out well for you. But over the years I've found myself wanting something more personal, like a local bookstore, instead of, say, a global mall. I mean, you have algorithms, Audible. Algorithms. I realize that is all fancy and technical, but you give me book recommendations based on a mathematics equation. Libro.fm provides recommendations from real, independent booksellers. Human beings.
And I couldn't shake the fact that by buying from you, I'd be lining the pockets of a handful of wealthy people and stockholders who have, at the bottom line, no interest in supporting the community I live in. Where are they? Do they even read audiobooks? With Libro.fm, I'm able to buy audiobooks through my local bookstore. I'm supporting the business owned by people I actually know and care about. I love my community, and I want to support it.
Audible, it's not you, it's me. Like I said, I couldn't expect you to be anything other than who you are. But Libro.fm gets me, so I'm going to have to say goodbye.
Sincerely,
A Bookstore Supporter

The Last Romantics
by Tara Conklin (signed copy!)
When the renowned poet Fiona Skinner is asked about the inspiration behind her iconic work,
The Love Poem, she tells her audience a story about her family and a betrayal that reverberates through time.
It begins in a big yellow house with a funeral, an iron poker, and a brief variation forever known as the Pause: a free and feral summer in a middle-class Connecticut town. Caught between the predictable life they once led and an uncertain future that stretches before them, the Skinner siblings-fierce Renee, sensitive Caroline, golden boy Joe and watchful Fiona-emerge from the Pause staunchly loyal and deeply connected. Two decades later, the siblings find themselves once again confronted with a family crisis that tests the strength of these bonds and forces them to question the life choices they've made and ask what, exactly, they will do for love.
A sweeping yet intimate epic about one American family,
The Last Romantics is an unforgettable exploration of the ties that bind us together, the responsibilities we embrace and the duties we resent, and how we can lose-and sometimes rescue-the ones we love. A novel that pierces the heart and lingers in the mind, it is also a beautiful meditation on the power of stories-how they navigate us through difficult times, help us understand the past, and point the way toward our future.

Finding Dorothy
by Elizabeth Letts
Hollywood, 1938: As soon as she learns that M-G-M is adapting her late husband's masterpiece for the screen, seventy-seven-year-old Maud Gage Baum sets about trying to finagle her way onto the set. Nineteen years after Frank's passing, Maud is the only person who can help the producers stay true to the spirit of the book-because she's the only one left who knows its secrets.
But the moment she hears Judy Garland rehearsing the first notes of "Over the Rainbow," Maud recognizes the yearning that defined her own life story, from her youth as a suffragette's daughter to her coming of age as one of the first women in the Ivy League, from her blossoming romance with Frank to the hardscrabble prairie years that inspired The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
. Judy reminds Maud of a young girl she cared for and tried to help in South Dakota, a dreamer who never got her happy ending. Now, with the young actress under pressure from the studio as well as her ambitious stage mother, Maud resolves to protect her-the way she tried so hard to protect the real Dorothy.
The author of two
New York Times
bestselling nonfiction books,
The Eighty-Dollar Champion
and
The Perfect Horse
, Elizabeth Letts is a master at discovering and researching a rich historical story and transforming it into a page-turner. Finding Dorothy
is the result of Letts's journey into the amazing lives of Frank and Maud Baum. Written as fiction but based closely on the truth, Elizabeth Letts's new book tells a story of love, loss, inspiration, and perseverance, set in America's heartland.

The Forgiving Kind
by Donna Everhart
For twelve-year-old Martha "Sonny" Creech, there is no place more beautiful than her family's cotton farm. She, her two brothers, and her parents work hard on their land-hoeing, planting, picking-but only Sonny loves the rich, dark earth the way her father does. When a tragic accident claims his life, her stricken family struggles to fend off ruin-until their rich, reclusive neighbor offers to help finance that year's cotton crop.
Sonny is dismayed when her mama accepts Frank Fowler's offer; even more so when Sonny's best friend, Daniel, points out that the man has ulterior motives. Sonny has a talent for divining water-an ability she shared with her father and earns her the hated nickname "water witch" in school. But uncanny as that skill may be, it won't be enough to offset Mr. Fowler's disturbing influence in her world. Even her bond with Daniel begins to collapse under the weight of Mr. Fowler's bigoted taunts. Though she tries to bury her misgivings for the sake of her mama's happiness, Sonny doesn't need a willow branch to divine that a reckoning is coming, bringing with it heartache, violence-and perhaps, a fitting and surprising measure of justice.

American Pop
by Snowden Wright
The story of a family.
The story of an empire.
The story of a nation.
Moving from Mississippi to Paris to New York and back again, a saga of family, ambition, passion, and tragedy that brings to life one unforgettable Southern dynasty-the Forsters, founders of the world's first major soft-drink company-against the backdrop of more than a century of American cultural history.
The child of immigrants, Houghton Forster has always wanted more-from his time as a young boy in Mississippi, working twelve-hour days at his father's drugstore; to the moment he first laid eyes on his future wife, Annabelle Teague, a true Southern belle of aristocratic lineage; to his invention of the delicious fizzy drink that would transform him from tiller boy into the founder of an empire, the Panola Cola Company, and entice a youthful, enterprising nation entering a hopeful new age.
Now the heads of a preeminent American family spoken about in the same breath as the Hearsts and the Rockefellers, Houghton and Annabelle raise their four children with the expectation they'll one day become world leaders. The burden of greatness falls early on eldest son Montgomery, a handsome and successful politician who has never recovered from the horrors and heartbreak of the Great War. His younger siblings Ramsey and Lance, known as the "infernal twins," are rivals not only in wit and beauty, but in their utter carelessness with the lives and hearts of others. Their brother Harold, as gentle and caring as the twins can be cruel, is slowed by a mental disability-and later generations seem equally plagued by misfortune, forcing Houghton to seriously consider who should control the company after he's gone.
An irresistible tour de force of original storytelling,
American Pop blends fact and fiction, the mundane and the mythical, and utilizes techniques of historical reportage to capture how, in Nathaniel Hawthorne's words, "families are always rising and falling in America," and to explore the many ways in which nostalgia can manipulate cultural memory-and the stories we choose to tell about ourselves.

Unexampled Courage: The Blinding of Sgt. Isaac Woodard and the Awakening of President Harry S. Truman and Judge J. Waties Waring
by Richard Gergel
On February 12, 1946, Sergeant Isaac Woodard, a returning, decorated African American veteran, was removed from a Greyhound bus in Batesburg, South Carolina, after he challenged the bus driver's disrespectful treatment of him. Woodard, in uniform, was arrested by the local police chief, Lynwood Shull, and beaten and blinded while in custody.
President Harry Truman was outraged by the incident. He established the first presidential commission on civil rights and his Justice Department filed criminal charges against Shull. In July 1948, following his commission's recommendation, Truman ordered an end to segregation in the U.S. armed forces. An all-white South Carolina jury acquitted Shull, but the presiding judge, J. Waties Waring, was conscience-stricken by the failure of the court system to do justice by the soldier. Waring described the trial as his "baptism of fire," and began issuing major civil rights decisions from his Charleston courtroom, including his 1951 dissent in Briggs v. Elliott declaring public school segregation per se unconstitutional. Three years later, the Supreme Court adopted Waring's language and reasoning in Brown v. Board of Education. Richard Gergel's Unexampled Courage details the impact of the blinding of Sergeant Woodard on the racial awakening of President Truman and Judge Waring, and traces their influential roles in changing the course of America's civil rights history.

What If It's True?: A Storyteller's Journey with Jesus
by Charles Martin
Years ago, Martin cracked open his Bible and began wrestling with a few fundamental questions. He asked, "What if every single word of Scripture is absolutely true and I can trust it? How do I respond? Something in me should change, but what? How?" This book is the result of that exploration.
Writing as our guide, he uses a storyteller's imagination to illuminate key moments from the Scriptures, primarily from the life and ministry of Jesus. In addition, Martin shares key moments from his own journey as a disciple-and bondservant-of Christ and a mentor to others. The result is a striking exploration of truth that helps us not just think differently, but live differently. Today.

Our Towns: A 100,000-Mile Journey into the Heart of America
by James Fallows and Deborah Fallows
(Greenville is featured!)
For five years, James and Deborah Fallows have travelled across America in a single-engine prop airplane. Visiting dozens of towns, the America they saw is acutely conscious of its problems-from economic dislocation to the opioid scourge-but it is also crafting solutions, with a practical-minded determination at dramatic odds with the bitter paralysis of national politics. At times of dysfunction on a national level, reform possibilities have often arisen from the local level. The Fallowses describe America in the middle of one of these creative waves. Their view of the country is as complex and contradictory as America itself, but it also reflects the energy, the generosity and compassion, the dreams, and the determination of many who are in the midst of making things better. Our Towns
is the story of their journey-and an account of a country busy remaking itself.

On the Come Up
by Angie Thomas (signed copy!)
Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri's got massive shoes to fill.
But it's hard to get your come up when you're labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral...for all the wrong reasons.
Bri soon finds herself at the center of a controversy, portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. But with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri doesn't just want to make it-she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.
Insightful, unflinching, and full of heart, On the Come Up is an ode to hip hop from one of the most influential literary voices of a generation. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; and about how, especially for young black people, freedom of speech isn't always free.

The Night Agent by Matthew Quirk
This is literally a stay-up late, can't put it down action thriller. Peter Sutherland is an FBI agent whose career is tainted by the sins of his father, but guided by his own strong sense of right and wrong. When he receives a panic-stricken call from a young woman named Rose on a secret FBI hot line, he has no idea of the challenges he will soon be facing, or how the decisions he must make will test his moral codes. Sutherland is an approachable and honest character, not imbibed by the author with superhuman strengths or abilities. The story is intricate and fast-paced, yet still feels legitimate and real. I really liked this book and expect it will be a runaway best seller!

The Lost Man by Jane Harper
Jane Harper has again created characters who are rife with flaws. Some unforgivable, but all very real and pervasive in the world. The characters are so engaging you will find yourself hoping for a certain outcome in the plot. Don't kid yourself, you will never guess where this plot is headed. The pictures painted of the remote cattle ranches in Australia gave me chills. The isolation between the brothers is so extreme, you can fool yourself into thinking it is all geographic. The legacy of abuse in families is addressed baldly and honestly. Nathan's voice tells the story in the manner of an artist layering paint. Each layer reveals more of the story and the small actions that brought the family to this point. I loved every page of this book.

The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter
I have been a huge Karin Slaughter fan since her first book. I love the Grant County and Will Trent series and always eagerly await the next book. I loved the last stand alone and think this book is even better. The dynamic between sisters, parents, spouses and the rural town population is portrayed with chilling reality. The physical damage to children and the lasting impacts of such are so real in this book it will give you chills. I find that I enjoy meeting new characters in the stand alone books as the depth of personality is so well portrayed very early in the book.

The Reckoning by Yrsa Sigurdardottir
The Reckoning is crime fiction at its darkest. The story opens with the rape and murder of an 8yo girl and it doesn't lighten up until justice or revenge, as the case may be, is finally meted out. A time capsule unburied after 10 years reveals the disturbed threats of a then 12 year old boy. About the same time the body of an unknown man with both hands sawed off is discovered. Detective Huldar, who has been demoted because of behavior during his last grisly murder case is not given the murder case but rather the investigation into the note found in the time capsule. He immediately involves child psychologist Freyja hoping for insights into the mind of a 12 year old and hope of patching up their relationship. The Icelandic setting, corruption in the justice system, and the flawed main characters all work together to make a mesmerizing police procedural with a double whammy of an ending.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
Alicia Berenson has been locked in a mental hospital for the criminally insane ever since she was convicted of killing her husband 6 years earlier. She did not say a word during her trial and has not uttered a word in the 6 years since. Theo Faber is a psycho-therapist who has been interested in Alicia's case since he first heard about it on TV. When a position comes open at The Grove, the hospital where she is incarcerated, Theo applies for the position convinced he can get Alicia to speak again. The story starts slowly as Theo tries to peel back the layers of Alicia's life and starts gathering information from friends and relatives that might help him understand why Alicia did what she did, and allow him to get through to her somehow. As Theo patiently talks to Alicia in session after session, she seems to slowly start to respond. Then, out of the blue, we are thrown suddenly into a story that we could not have imagined and given an ending with a twist that defies belief... until you realize that the facts were there all of the time. Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown
Many of us get so busy with our day-to-day lives and all the stuff we 'have' to do that we lose sight of what's most important to us in life. Many times we jump straight to 'how will I fit that in' without first even considering whether it's something meaningful for us to be doing. We forget we even have the option of saying 'No'. I loved this book so much I'm considering starting a bookclub around it. If you're interested in participating, just let me know.

Brave, Not Perfect: Fear Less, Fail More, and Live Bolder
Although acquaintances may think me brave (I started my own business and I rock climb for fun), I identified deeply with the personal insecurities, fears, and foibles Reshma shared in her book Brave, Not Perfect: Fear Less, Fail More, and Live Bolder. Though she focuses just on the female gender, I think everyone could learn from this book and hope it's message gets shared wide and far.

Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust
Mina is a girl with a glass heart who has been told by her father her whole life that she's incapable of loving or being loved. Lynet is a girl made of snow who has been told by her father her whole life that she's just like her mother. Mina wants to be queen; Lynet's father is king. Both must figure out who they are and decide whether they will choose their own destiny or let others choose for them. Told in alternating points of view between Lynet and Mina, this Snow White retelling will appeal to any fan of fairy tales, but especially to those who love getting to know the villains better like in the movie Maleficent.
