Dear Audible,
I feel torn writing this, because we've had so many good times. We've been through so much together. I really mean that. Remember that road trip to Minneapolis, where we drove through the night, and you helped keep me awake? And those early mornings at the gym on the elliptical with the sounds of my favorite authors and stories? I will always cherish those times. I want you to know that.
But there are some things that have been bothering me for a long time. I didn't say anything, because it didn't seem as though there was anything that could be done to change them. But over the years I've found myself wanting something more personal, like a local bookstore, instead of, say, a global mall. I mean, you have algorithms, Audible. Algorithms. President Harry Truman was outraged by the incident. He established the first presidential commission on civil rights and his Justice Department filed criminal charges against Shull. In July 1948, following his commission's recommendation, Truman ordered an end to segregation in the U.S. armed forces. An all-white South Carolina jury acquitted Shull, but the presiding judge, J. Waties Waring, was conscience-stricken by the failure of the court system to do justice by the soldier. Waring described the trial as his "baptism of fire," and began issuing major civil rights decisions from his Charleston courtroom, including his 1951 dissent in Briggs v. Elliott declaring public school segregation per se unconstitutional. Three years later, the Supreme Court adopted Waring's language and reasoning in Brown v. Board of Education. The Night Agent by Matthew Quirk
This is literally a stay-up late, can't put it down action thriller. Peter Sutherland is an FBI agent whose career is tainted by the sins of his father, but guided by his own strong sense of right and wrong. When he receives a panic-stricken call from a young woman named Rose on a secret FBI hot line, he has no idea of the challenges he will soon be facing, or how the decisions he must make will test his moral codes. Sutherland is an approachable and honest character, not imbibed by the author with superhuman strengths or abilities. The story is intricate and fast-paced, yet still feels legitimate and real. I really liked this book and expect it will be a runaway best seller!

The Lost Man by Jane Harper
Jane Harper has again created characters who are rife with flaws. Some unforgivable, but all very real and pervasive in the world. The characters are so engaging you will find yourself hoping for a certain outcome in the plot. Don't kid yourself, you will never guess where this plot is headed. The pictures painted of the remote cattle ranches in Australia gave me chills. The isolation between the brothers is so extreme, you can fool yourself into thinking it is all geographic. The legacy of abuse in families is addressed baldly and honestly. Nathan's voice tells the story in the manner of an artist layering paint. Each layer reveals more of the story and the small actions that brought the family to this point. I loved every page of this book.

The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter
I have been a huge Karin Slaughter fan since her first book. I love the Grant County and Will Trent series and always eagerly await the next book. I loved the last stand alone and think this book is even better. The dynamic between sisters, parents, spouses and the rural town population is portrayed with chilling reality. The physical damage to children and the lasting impacts of such are so real in this book it will give you chills. I find that I enjoy meeting new characters in the stand alone books as the depth of personality is so well portrayed very early in the book.

The Reckoning by Yrsa Sigurdardottir
The Reckoning is crime fiction at its darkest. The story opens with the rape and murder of an 8yo girl and it doesn't lighten up until justice or revenge, as the case may be, is finally meted out. A time capsule unburied after 10 years reveals the disturbed threats of a then 12 year old boy. About the same time the body of an unknown man with both hands sawed off is discovered. Detective Huldar, who has been demoted because of behavior during his last grisly murder case is not given the murder case but rather the investigation into the note found in the time capsule. He immediately involves child psychologist Freyja hoping for insights into the mind of a 12 year old and hope of patching up their relationship. The Icelandic setting, corruption in the justice system, and the flawed main characters all work together to make a mesmerizing police procedural with a double whammy of an ending.

Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown
Many of us get so busy with our day-to-day lives and all the stuff we 'have' to do that we lose sight of what's most important to us in life. Many times we jump straight to 'how will I fit that in' without first even considering whether it's something meaningful for us to be doing. We forget we even have the option of saying 'No'. I loved this book so much I'm considering starting a bookclub around it. If you're interested in participating, just let me know.

Brave, Not Perfect: Fear Less, Fail More, and Live Bolder
Although acquaintances may think me brave (I started my own business and I rock climb for fun), I identified deeply with the personal insecurities, fears, and foibles Reshma shared in her book Brave, Not Perfect: Fear Less, Fail More, and Live Bolder. Though she focuses just on the female gender, I think everyone could learn from this book and hope it's message gets shared wide and far.
