February 2017

Fiction Addiction has customers and employees on both sides of today's political divide. As a bookstore owner, I believe in freedom of speech and am opposed to censorship.

We hold author events for politicians on both sides. We have done book sales for Democratic Representative Jim Clyburn and Greenville's Democratic Women's group, as well as hosted Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson, Republican Senator Marco Rubio (before he ran for president), and (now-former) Governor Nikki Haley. Given the geography of our store, we do tend to get more Republican events than Democratic ones.

I hope that our liberal customers who were upset with us for hosting conservative events will come out and support our February 7th event with Laurie Frankel. Laurie is not a politician; however, her novel, This Is How It Always Is, revolves around a family with a transgender child. Laurie's novel is based on her own experience with her own child. If the store can show a good track record of support for more liberal authors and events, then we can lobby publishers for more such authors. At the same time, we of course hope our conservative customers will attend the event to understand what the Frankels are going through and to be part of a constructive dialogue. I met Laurie at a book trade show last September, and she told me that she is very hard to offend and is open to any question that any customer may have for her.

On event days, we naturally sway more to one side than the other. But on nonevent days, we hope that every customer finds our store to be a safe space with books supporting all views.

2017 Southern Book Prize Nominations
2016 Southern Book Prize

Each year, hundreds of booksellers across the South vote on the books they have most enjoyed selling to customers: the books we couldn't stop talking about; books by southern writers, or with a southern perspective, or both. For a book to be eligible for the 2016 Southern Book Prize, it must be set in the South, or the author must be Southern (or both), and it must have been published in 2016. We would like to invite you, our customers, to nominate your favorite southern books from last year. Our display up front is stocked with some great ideas, but don't feel limited to just what we could fit there! But hurry, as the nomination deadline is next Friday, February 10th. So stop by the store by February 10th and fill out a nomination form.

Coretta's is a love story, a family saga, and the memoir of an extraordinary black woman in 20th-century America, a brave leader who, in the face of terrorism and violent hatred, stood committed, proud, forgiving, nonviolent, and hopeful every day of her life.

City of the Lost City of the Lost by Kelley Armstrong
Casey Duncan is a brilliant homicide detective with a deep, dark secret in her past that seems to be catching up to her -- one only her best friend Diana knows. So when Diana finally agrees to run away from her abusive ex, Casey decides it is time for her to run also. When a secret committee accepts Diana and Casey into Rocton, a unique town in the middle of nowhere in the Yukon that claims to be able to protect and hide victims from abusive spouses or hit men or other people out to do harm, sheriff Eric Dalton reluctantly agrees to give Casey a 6 month trial as his deputy, as people are disappearing and he fears something very serious is going on. As Casey begins investigating, there are soon way more questions than answers, and no one may be who they are supposed to be. Lots of twists and turns and surprises make this first-in-series a great thriller and mystery.

Behind Her Eyes Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough
Behind Her Eyes took me totally by surprise. From the beginning, I knew it was a story of a very disturbed person, but which one was the sick one? I knew something happened in the past which was driving two of the main characters, and slowly I thought I was discovering the truth about the past -- but boy was I wrong. A very dark and eerie psychological thriller about love and obsession that you will not be able to put down until you discover the truth.

The Photographer's Wife The Photographer's Eyes by Suzanne Joinson
A sweeping novel about a young girl who lives with her father in Jerusalem prior to the war. She is 11 and has an absurd amount of freedom, and with that comes the potential for disaster. We follow Prue through her marriage adn the birth of her child. The focus of the books is the incredible way that tragedies in childhood can impact your entire life. Parts of the novel are hard to read, but the brutality that exists in the world is brought to life by the author's words. A strong historical aspect, but the main story is that of Prue's life. For any fan of historical fiction based in war time.
