October 2018

Thanks to everyone who responded to our customer satisfaction survey. If you missed it, I'll be sending another one in the new year. Of the 272 customers that replied, 86.5% of you gave us a favorable rating, 7.1% were neutral, and 7.5% were unsatisfied. I'm a realist so I'm not aiming for 100% satisfaction, but I think we definitely have some opportunity for growth here and we'll be working on it this holiday season.  To that end, we've hired a new bookseller, Joshua Parris, whom we hope to have trained up and helping you all very soon.

We have a huge event lineup this month and we hope to see you all often over the course of the holiday season. Be well and have a great fall!

Becoming Mrs. Lewis Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan

From  New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan comes an exquisite novel of Joy Davidman, the woman C. S. Lewis called "my whole world." When poet and writer Joy Davidman began writing letters to C. S. Lewis-known as Jack-she was looking for spiritual answers, not love. Love, after all, wasn't holding together her crumbling marriage. Everything about New Yorker Joy seemed ill-matched for an Oxford don and the beloved writer of Narnia, yet their minds bonded over their letters. Embarking on the adventure of her life, Joy traveled from America to England and back again, facing heartbreak and poverty, discovering friendship and faith, and against all odds, finding a love that even the threat of death couldn't destroy.

In this masterful exploration of one of the greatest love stories of modern times, we meet a brilliant writer, a fiercely independent mother, and a passionate woman who changed the life of this respected author and inspired books that still enchant us and change us. Joy lived at a time when women weren't meant to have a voice-and yet her love for Jack gave them both voices they didn't know they had.

At once a fascinating historical novel and a glimpse into a writer's life,  Becoming Mrs. Lewis is above all a love story-a love of literature and ideas and a love between a husband and wife that, in the end, was not impossible at all.

A Spark of Light A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult

The warm fall day starts like any other at the Center-a women's reproductive health services clinic-its staff offering care to anyone who passes through its doors. Then, in late morning, a desperate and distraught gunman bursts in and opens fire, taking all inside hostage.

After rushing to the scene, Hugh McElroy, a police hostage negotiator, sets up a perimeter and begins making a plan to communicate with the gunman. As his phone vibrates with incoming text messages he glances at it and, to his horror, finds out that his fifteen-year-old daughter, Wren, is inside the clinic.

But Wren is not alone. She will share the next and tensest few hours of her young life with a cast of unforgettable characters: A nurse who calms her own panic in order to save the life of a wounded woman. A doctor who does his work not in spite of his faith but because of it, and who will find that faith tested as never before. A pro-life protester, disguised as a patient, who now stands in the cross hairs of the same rage she herself has felt. A young woman who has come to terminate her pregnancy. And the disturbed individual himself, vowing to be heard.

Told in a daring and enthralling narrative structure that counts backward through the hours of the standoff, this is a story that traces its way back to what brought each of these very different individuals to the same place on this fateful day.

The Next Person You Meet in Heaven The Next Person You Meet in Heaven: The Sequel to The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

In this enchanting sequel to the number one bestseller  The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Mitch Albom tells the story of Eddie's heavenly reunion with Annie-the little girl he saved on earth-in an unforgettable novel of how our lives and losses intersect.

Fifteen years ago, in Mitch Albom's beloved novel,  The Five People You Meet in Heaven, the world fell in love with Eddie, a grizzled war veteran- turned-amusement park mechanic who died saving the life of a young girl named Annie. Eddie's journey to heaven taught him that every life matters. Now, in this magical sequel, Mitch Albom reveals Annie's story.

The accident that killed Eddie left an indelible mark on Annie. It took her left hand, which needed to be surgically reattached. Injured, scarred, and unable to remember why, Annie's life is forever changed by a guilt-ravaged mother who whisks her away from the world she knew. Bullied by her peers and haunted by something she cannot recall, Annie struggles to find acceptance as she grows. When, as a young woman, she reconnects with Paulo, her childhood love, she believes she has finally found happiness.

As the novel opens, Annie is marrying Paulo. But when her wedding night day ends in an unimaginable accident, Annie finds herself on her own heavenly journey-and an inevitable reunion with Eddie, one of the five people who will show her how her life mattered in ways she could not have fathomed.

Poignant and beautiful, filled with unexpected twists,  The Next Person You Meet in Heaven reminds us that not only does every life matter, but that every ending is also a beginning-we only need to open our eyes to see it.

Nonfiction
What Happened What Happened
by Hillary Rodham Clinton

For the first time, Hillary Clinton reveals what she was thinking during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. In an intimate voice now free from the constraints of politics, Hillary tells the story of what it was like to be the first woman nominated for president in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, kooky theatrics, Russian interference, a maddening inattention to serious issues, deplorable (yes, deplorable) bigotry, and an opponent who broke all the rules.

In these pages, Hillary describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and what the experience has taught her about life. With humor and candor, she tells readers what it took to get back on her feet-the rituals, the relationships, and occasional yelling at the television.

She also addresses the challenges of being a strong woman in public life, the criticism over her voice, age, and body, and how all women in politics confront a double standard whenever they express anger or ambition. Drawing upon the inspirational quotations she has collected for decades, she shows us how she became strong in the first place, how to find your core truths, and how to keep going in the face of adversity. In that sense, her book is a guide not just for how to persist in politics but also how to win in the real contest of life.

Hillary Clinton lost an election but she remains unbroken and undefeated. This memoir is for the millions of Americans who want to understand what really happened in 2016, how to make sense of it, and how we all can keep going.

Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci
by Walter Isaacson

Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo's astonishing notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Walter Isaacson weaves a narrative that connects his art to his science. He shows how Leonardo's genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy.

He produced the two most famous paintings in history,  The Last Supper and the  Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and technology. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry. His ability to stand at the crossroads of the humanities and the sciences, made iconic by his drawing of Vitruvian Man, made him history's most creative genius.

His creativity, like that of other great innovators, came from having wide-ranging passions. He peeled flesh off the faces of cadavers, drew the muscles that move the lips, and then painted history's most memorable smile. He explored the math of optics, showed how light rays strike the cornea, and produced illusions of changing perspectives in  The Last Supper. Isaacson also describes how Leonardo's lifelong enthusiasm for staging theatrical productions informed his paintings and inventions.
Leonardo's delight at combining diverse passions remains the ultimate recipe for creativity. So, too, does his ease at being a bit of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, left-handed, easily distracted, and at times heretical. His life should remind us of the importance of instilling, both in ourselves and our children, not just received knowledge but a willingness to question it-to be imaginative and, like talented misfits and rebels in any era, to think different.

Ship of Fools Ship of Fools: How a Selfish Ruling Class Is Bringing America to the Brink of Revolution
by  Tucker Carlson

In  Ship of Fools: How a Selfish Ruling Class is Bringing America to the Brink of Revolution, Tucker Carlson tells the truth about the new American elites, a group whose power and wealth has grown beyond imagination even as the rest of the country has withered. The people who run America now barely interact with it. They fly on their own planes, ski on their own mountains, watch sporting events far from the stands in sky boxes. They have total contempt for you.

"They view America the way a private equity firm sizes up an aging conglomerate," Carlson writes, "as something outdated they can profit from. When it fails, they're gone."

In  Ship of Fools, Tucker Carlson offers a blistering critique of our new overlords. Traditional liberals are gone, he writes. The patchouli-scented hand-wringers who worried about whales and defended free speech have been replaced by globalists who hide their hard-edged economic agenda behind the smokescreen of identity politics. They'll outsource your job while lecturing you about transgender bathrooms. Left and right, Carlson says, are no longer meaningful categories in America. "The rift is between those who benefit from the status quo, and those who don't."

Our leaders are fools, Carlson concludes, "unaware that they are captains of a sinking ship." But in the signature and witty style that viewers of  Tucker Carlson Tonight have come to enjoy, his book answers the all-important question: How do we put the country back on course?

Shade Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents
by  Pete Souza

Shade  is a portrait in contrasts, telling the tale of two presidencies through a series of powerful visual juxtapositions--with Pete Souza's unforgettable images of President Obama delivering new power and meaning when framed by tweets, headlines, quotes, and other material from the first 500 days of the Trump administration.

When Souza left the White House in 2017, he didn't know what it meant to "throw shade"--but soon learned he was doing it, by posting photographs on Instagram from the Obama years along with captions that vividly define the contrast between the Obama and Trump administrations. Since then, he has become a potent force in American life, offering incisive political criticism alongside powerful reminders of the best our country has to offer to nearly two million followers.

More than a sharp compendium of "claps back," this collection of Souza's indelible photography of a historic time is a touchstone to an era of integrity in politics. Souza's work reminds us of the highest American values we share, and gives the courage to stand up and speak out for what we believe in.

Undoing Democracy The Fifth Risk: Undoing Democracy
by  Michael Lewis

What are the consequences if the people given control over our government have no idea how it works?"The election happened," remembers Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, then deputy secretary of the Department of Energy. "And then there was radio silence." Across all departments, similar stories were playing out: Trump appointees were few and far between; those that did show up were shockingly uninformed about the functions of their new workplace. Some even threw away the briefing books that had been prepared for them.Michael Lewis's brilliant narrative takes us into the engine rooms of a government under attack by its own leaders. In Agriculture the funding of vital programs like food stamps and school lunches is being slashed. The Commerce Department may not have enough staff to conduct the 2020 Census properly. Over at Energy, where international nuclear risk is managed, it's not clear there will be enough inspectors to track and locate black market uranium before terrorists do.Willful ignorance plays a role in these looming disasters. If your ambition is to maximize short-term gains without regard to the long-term cost, you are better off not knowing those costs. If you want to preserve your personal immunity to the hard problems, it's better never to really understand those problems. There is upside to ignorance, and downside to knowledge. Knowledge makes life messier. It makes it a bit more difficult for a person who wishes to shrink the world to a worldview. If there are dangerous fools in this book, there are also heroes, unsung, of course. They are the linchpins of the system-those public servants whose knowledge, dedication, and proactivity keep the machinery running. Michael Lewis finds them, and he asks them what keeps them up at night.

These Truths These Truths: A History of the United States
by  Jill Lepore

In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian and New Yorker writer Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation, an urgently needed reckoning with the beauty and tragedy of American history.Written in elegiac prose, Lepore's groundbreaking investigation places truth itself-a devotion to facts, proof, and evidence-at the center of the nation's history. The American experiment rests on three ideas-"these truths," Jefferson called them-political equality, natural rights, and the sovereignty of the people. And it rests, too, on a fearless dedication to inquiry, Lepore argues, because self-government depends on it. But has the nation, and democracy itself, delivered on that promise? These Truths tells this uniquely American story, beginning in 1492, asking whether the course of events over more than five centuries has proven the nation's truths, or belied them. To answer that question, Lepore traces the intertwined histories of American politics, law, journalism, and technology, from the colonial town meeting to the nineteenth-century party machine, from talk radio to twenty-first-century Internet polls, from Magna Carta to the Patriot Act, from the printing press to Facebook News.Along the way, Lepore's sovereign chronicle is filled with arresting sketches of both well-known and lesser-known Americans, from a parade of presidents and a rogues' gallery of political mischief makers to the intrepid leaders of protest movements, including Frederick Douglass, the famed abolitionist orator; William Jennings Bryan, the three-time presidential candidate and ultimately tragic populist; Pauli Murray, the visionary civil rights strategist; and Phyllis Schlafly, the uncredited architect of modern conservatism.Americans are descended from slaves and slave owners, from conquerors and the conquered, from immigrants and from people who have fought to end immigration. "A nation born in contradiction will fight forever over the meaning of its history," Lepore writes, but engaging in that struggle by studying the past is part of the work of citizenship. "The past is an inheritance, a gift and a burden," These Truths observes. "It can't be shirked. There's nothing for it but to get to know it."

Having defeated the monstrous threat that nearly destroyed the peculiar world, Jacob Portman is back where his story began, in Florida. Except now Miss Peregrine, Emma, and their peculiar friends are with him, and doing their best to blend in. But carefree days of beach visits and normalling lessons are soon interrupted by a discovery-a subterranean bunker that belonged to Jacob's grandfather, Abe.

Clues to Abe's double-life as a peculiar operative start to emerge, secrets long hidden in plain sight. And Jacob begins to learn about the dangerous legacy he has inherited-truths that were part of him long before he walked into Miss Peregrine's time loop.

Now, the stakes are higher than ever as Jacob and his friends are thrust into the untamed landscape of American peculiardom-a world with few ymbrynes, or rules-that none of them understand. New wonders, and dangers, await in this brilliant next chapter for Miss Peregrine's peculiar children. Their story is again illustrated by haunting vintage photographs, now with the striking addition of full-color images interspersed throughout for this all-new, multi-era American adventure.

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green
 - Signed Copies Available!
The Carls just appeared.

Roaming through New York City at three a.m., twenty-three-year-old April May stumbles across a giant sculpture. Delighted by its appearance and craftsmanship-like a ten-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor-April and her friend, Andy, make a video with it, which Andy uploads to YouTube. The next day, April wakes up to a viral video and a new life. News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world-from Beijing to Buenos Aires-and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the center of an intense international media spotlight.

Seizing the opportunity to make her mark on the world, April now has to deal with the consequences her new particular brand of fame has on her relationships, her safety, and her own identity. And all eyes are on April to figure out not just what the Carls are, but what they want from us.

Compulsively entertaining and powerfully relevant,  An Absolutely Remarkable Thing  grapples with big themes, including how the social internet is changing fame, rhetoric, and radicalization; how our culture deals with fear and uncertainty; and how vilification and adoration spring for the same dehumanization that follows a life in the public eye. The beginning of an exciting fiction career,  An Absolutely Remarkable Thing  is a bold and insightful novel of now.

The Witch Elm The Witch Elm by Tana French
Do you ever really escape the events of your past? This book will give you chills as dire events of the present are related to cavalier acts of youth. The main character is incredibly flawed inside but maintains a facade that others may envy. Perhaps everyone struggles with tragedy, but maybe none more than the previously charmed individual. The book has a great cast of supporting characters that are extremely well developed. Any mystery or literary fan will enjoy this book.

Lies I Know You Know by Gilly Macmillan
I Know You Know is framed through a series of true crime podcasts produced by Cody Swift, whose two best friends were murdered 20 years earlier, when they were just 10 years old. Cody is convinced the man who was convicted of their murders was not guilty and hopes that time will uncover facts that weren't discovered then. Coincidentally, as the podcast starts the bones of a long missing man are discovered near the spot that the boys' murder took place. Detective Fletcher, one of the two detectives who discovered the murdered boys 20 years earlier is given the new case. The story switches back and forth from 20 years ago to present and is told mainly from the view point of Cody, Detective Fletcher, and Jessica Paige, the mother of one of the murdered boys. Cody is vigilant in trying to find the truth, even when being threatened and told to stop. Or, does he have an ulterior motive? Jess, who has a new life with a husband and 16 yo daughter, has not told her daughter about the son she had when only 16. She has vowed to be a real mother to Erica and is riddled with guilt because of how neglectful she was as a very young mother. Or, is she riddled with guilt because she actually had something to do with harming her son? Fletcher has always been overly ambitions and has ignored procedure to accomplish what he thought was justice. But, was he a good guy who just wanted to catch the bad guy or was he corrupt? Gilly MacMillan gives us a thrilling saga that spans 20 years, a saga you are immediately pulled into. Switching back and forth from the past to the present lets you really get to know the characters and why they developed as they did. You will go from loving them to hating them and back again until you finally find out their true character and what really happened 20 years ago.

Boy at the Keyhole The Boy at the Keyhole by Stephen Giles
The Boy at The Keyhole is a psychological thriller told from the view point of a 9 year old. Set on an old estate in England in the mid 1960s the gothic feel was unmistakable. Samuel was very believable in his longing for his missing mother, in his spurts of defiance toward the cruel (in Samuel's eyes) housekeeper Ruth, and in his very vivid and suggestible imagination. I went back and forth from believing Ruth had done something to his mother to believing that Samuel was coming mentally unhinged as Ruth kept telling him. The ending caught me totally by surprise and I am still trying to come to terms with what happened, and how and why it happened. This would be a terrific book club book - a quick, easy read with lots of what ifs, and whys.

Milly must testify at her mother's trial but no one, other than her foster parents and the school principal know who she actually is. Rising Out of Hatred Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist by Eli Saslow
Rising out of Hatred is the story of Derek Black, son of a leading white nationalist and the so-called 'heir' of the movement. Black's ultimate rejection of his legacy causes him to rethink his whole future. This is a fine journalistic piece of writing by a Pulitzer Prize winning author. Saslow's in-depth investigation of his subject matter shines throughout the book. His interviews with Black's friends and family heavily support his reporting. It is hard to find an unbiased bit of political writing nowadays, but I think this is about as close as it comes.

November Road November Road by Lou Berney
Don't make the mistake of considering this a work of historical fiction (it is, set against and intertwined with the assassination of JFK). Don't consider it a suspense novel (it is, with Frank Guidry on the run for his life from a ruthless assassin and an organized crime boss with contacts everywhere, who are pursuing Frank for what he might know or have done in relation to the killing of JFK), and by no means consider it a love story (although, implausibly it becomes one when Frank falls for a young woman traveling with her two small children, and on the run for reasons of her own). This book is most simply a story, and one that is exceptionally well told. Lou Berney has crafted a very compelling tale with very human and relatable characters, each with their own flaws, secrets, dreams and desires. There are ups and downs, twists and turns, but mostly it's the story that grabs hold of you and keeps you turning the pages to the very end. This book was a joy to read.

Winter Soldier Winter Soldier by Daniel Mason
This lushly written story of Lucius, a young medical student forced to turn trauma surgeon at the onset of the first world war, and how that transition was made possible by the support and guidance he received from Margarete, a field nurse, will take your breath away. At once a vivid and visceral portrayal of the horrors of war and the inhumanity men can inflict on one another is at the same time a story of brotherhood, hope and kindness. The narrative brings the reader into the story and is not one that you will find easy to put down. In the midst of the war Lucius is separated from Margarete and his search for her and what has become of her following their separation will keep you on the edge of your seat to the very last. This is an outstanding book, expertly written. I was enchanted by it.

The Dream Daughter The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain
I loved this book! It is a fascinating story about a young woman who is a widow living in the Outer Banks of N.C. in 1970. The concept of the book is time travel - how chosen people can move between certain points in time. I know! I can't begin to understand time travel and am pretty sure I don't believe it is even possible. But, this book is so beautifully written with many twists and surprises throughout that somehow you are able to forget that time travel does not really exist. You are so caught up in the story of this young woman who will do anything to save the life of the unborn child she is carrying. With references to many life changing events from the Vietnam War on up to 9/11, you will be amazed at how different life in America is in 2001 for someone who has traveled from 1970. This book is one I could not put down. I highly recommend it! Great for book group discussion.

The Indigo Girl The Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd
Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd is a lively historical novel about Eliza Lucas Pinckney, a 16-year-old girl left in charge of her absent father's three South Carolina plantations in 1739 and who became the first person to produce commercial-grade indigo in the American colonies. But instead of death, Jupiter North comes for her and takes her to Nevermoor, beginning a series of adventures during which Morrigan must show her mettle or be kicked out of her new home for good. With a setting as magical and wondrous as Hogwarts, and a mentor as quirky as Willy Wonka or The Doctor, this one of my favorite middle-grade reads in years.

What If It's Us What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera
When Arthur goes to New York for the summer, he expects it to be a lot like the Broadway plays he adores. But it's not. Ben, on the other hand, is much more pragmatic, in that native New Yorker way. When they meet, Arthur falls head over heels almost immediately, and his enthusiasm may rub off a bit on Ben...but things don't exactly work out in real life the way they do on stage. With alternating chapters from Arthur's and Ben's points of view, this is another wonderful read from Albertalli and Silvera, and fans of both authors won't be disappointed (and fans of musical theater will love it even more).
