Empowering Our Youth to Strengthen Our Democracy

Oct 2, 2024

Dear Debbie,

With only a few weeks to go until the election, we can hardly believe our good fortune – with your support, we have brought on 86 interns who are hard at work getting out the vote. They are a talented, energetic, creative group of future leaders and we are simply in awe of what they are getting done!

Our voter outreach this fall targets young Black potential voters in NC, PA, and GA. We are reaching these folks with our postcards, Instagram ads, and phone calls. Our nonpartisan messaging highlights the issues at stake in this election (abortion rights, affordable housing, etc.) and provides the information necessary to find a polling place and cast a vote.

Our interns have been creating ads for us to place on Instagram, explaining to other young people how to figure out where and when to vote and what is on the ballot. Here is one of the intern-designed Instagram ads we are running this fall. Click on the image of the intern and you'll be taken to the video.

As you can see, videos made by young people for young people have an appeal that can't be matched!

Each of our interns received a box of 800 postcards and each has recruited friends and relatives to decorate them and get them in the mail.

At Howard University, a group of interns set up a table and had students passing by stop to write postcards.

At Spelman College, interns have been holding postcard parties in partnership with campus organizations. Look at that stack of completed postcards!

But the award for the biggest postcard party so far this fall goes to a student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University! This party had roughly 80 people writing postcards together and they were able to decorate about 700 postcards in one sitting. This is just one part of the crowded room:

As soon as the postcards have all been put in the mail and our final Instagram ads are up and running, our interns will turn their attention to phone banking. We expect them to make nearly 40,000 phone calls in the final weeks leading up to the election. They will be calling young Black registered voters to provide information to motivate and enable them to vote.

Our interns and the volunteers they recruit to help them get out the vote are learning that they are powerful and that the future will be shaped by the work that they do today. They are fierce in their determination to make the world they live in a better place. We are fortunate that the future is in their capable hands!

It's not too late to make a donation to support our voter turnout efforts this fall.

With hope for our democracy,
