“Take a long, hard look down the road you will have to travel once you have made a commitment to work for change. Know that this transformation will not happen right away… In the movement, we didn't know how history would play itself out. When we were getting arrested and waiting in jail or standing in unmovable lines on the courthouse steps, we didn’t know what would happen, but we knew it had to happen.
…We used to say that ours is not the struggle of one day, one week, or one year. Ours is not the struggle of one judicial appointment or presidential term. Ours is the struggle of a lifetime, or maybe even many lifetimes, and each one of us in every generation must do our part. And if we believe in the change we seek, then it is easy to commit to doing all we can, because the responsibility is ours alone to build a better society and a more peaceful world.”
― John Lewis, Across That Bridge: A Vision for Change and the Future of America
Dear People of Ascension,
In the wake of Louisiana vs. Callais, the Supreme Court decision yesterday that effectively gutted the Voting Rights Act, I found these words from the great Congressman John Lewis, who risked and suffered so much for Black freedom, equality and voting rights. He saw the vote as sacred, and also knew the struggle was not finished. At the very end of his life he wrote this to us all:
“I urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe. In my life I have done all I can to demonstrate that the way of peace, the way of love and nonviolence is the more excellent way. Now it is your turn to let freedom ring.”
I expect Congressman Lewis would be angered and grieved by the court’s decision yesterday. Then he would get to work and challenge us to do likewise.
I find a synchronicity here with Sunday’s gospel, in which Jesus tells very anxious disciples (which surely includes us) “don’t let your hearts be troubled.” Even though there is plenty of trouble around (and not the “good trouble” kind), he reminds them that God dwells with them. If they trust, and continue with Jesus on the way of courageous, self-giving love, hospitality and justice, they will get where they need to go.
God is both our journey’s companion and our resting place. When your hearts are troubled, breathe into that assurance, those images, that presence. Trusting in God and walking together, may we find strength and courage for the work that is ours to do.
Liz

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion
If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.
In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

Immigration Legal Support Fund – Recently our diocese announced a new Immigration Legal Support Fund to support immigrant families in our congregations and neighborhoods throughout the Diocese of New York. The Legal Fund will help those navigating immigration under urgent and vulnerable circumstances to access legal resources. We're starting with a $50,000 contribution from the Bishop’s discretionary funds. Help us to match this amount to keep families together. With your support, we can do more so that no one faces the system alone. Your contribution makes possible same-day response, family preparedness, limited-scope appearances, and urgent filings. You can contribute here. To learn more about the Immigration Legal Support Fund Click here.
