It was my 50th birthday on Friday. I had a party. It was great—end of story.

Or not quite because it does make me think. Someone said to me that fifty is the new twenty, and I thought, please no. I have no desire to go back to my twenties. In fact, I have no desire to go back to any of my decades so far, maybe apart from the first one. I am happy to be where I am and even more excited about where I am heading.

To mark my big birthday, I have created a small series of look-backs (fifty words each) in the newsletters in the next couple of weeks. You can find them in the WHAT I WAS section below.

There is also MICRO FICTION fresh from the oven. These pieces continue to round up the animals, and I hope you enjoy that.

As always, I am grateful and honored for your subscription. Thank you!

WHAT I WAS

IGMy00s.jpg

My first decade was full of wonder. I wanted more and could not wait to get older. I longed for the outer world to catch up with my inner world. I developed empathy and a sense of how others saw me. That became important to me. I wanted to belong.

In my second decade, I still wanted to grow up fast. I cherry-picked my role models; Prince, David Bowie, U2, Salvador Dali, Sartre, Beauvoir, Kierkegaard. I sought to do everything by the book but not conform, to play the game but my way. Toward the end, I fell in love.
