Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As many of you know August is usually one of our hottest months. However this year the heat index has risen so quickly and at such an alarming rate that it's proven to be dangerous to our health. Not only is the climate getting hotter, forecasters are now sounding the alarm for an increase in the intensity of hurricanes.

We need to be prepared! I encourage all of our residents to take advantage of the Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, which begins Saturday, Aug.26 and extends through Friday, Sept. 8. During that time, qualifying items related to disaster preparedness are exempt from sales tax.
Remember! Make a plan, build a kit, get involved and be informed. For more information, visit readypbc.com.

Lyons Road Construction Update
Why is Lyons Road not completed yet?

The construction on Lyons Road is proceeding at a pace that ensures safety for all motorists. The delays we are experiencing are due to housing developments that were built before the road was ready.

Rather than a simple road widening, County Engineers are forced to dig around existing power lines, Comcast lines, internet lines and gas pipes. My policy has always been and will continue to be no further housing developments should be approved before the infrastructure is in place. Please be patient. We are working as fast as we can.

Chair of the Tourist Development Council
As summer generates record heat, tourism remains robust in Palm Beach County. Last month, bed taxes collected reached $4.6 million as people continued to come and play.

The former Honda Classic has been rebranded to The Classic in the Palm Beaches as the PGA Tour commits to remain in the county.

The Cultural Council of Palm Beach County will host the Arts & Tourism Summit: Access for All on Wednesday, Aug. 30 and Thursday, Aug. 31. This voluntary professional development event is expected to draw 300 professionals from the arts and tourism sectors. Florida Atlantic University's football team is slated to kick off the season at home on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m., against Monmouth, followed by a matchup against Ohio on Saturday, Sept. 9.

With off season changes that include transitioning from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference (AAC), FAU looks to start strong and establish itself as a threat to new opponents. One season removed from a 5-7 record, the FAU Owls hope to make a name for themselves this year in the AAC and jump out to an early lead in the conference.

Tune into ESPN+ to catch all the action live from Boca Raton this season.
Let's GO OWLS!!

Chair of Solid Waste Authority
SWA’s August Household Hazardous Waste Tip
"If you’re a do-it-yourself mechanic, remember to dispose of it yourself"

Get in gear with good practices that protect our environment and keep our communities clean.

Whether from cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, recreational vehicles or lawnmowers, DIY mechanics should not mix these items nor throw them away in the garbage:

  • antifreeze
  • filters
  • fuels
  • motor oils

Palm Beach County do-it-yourselfers should bring these items to one of seven Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (SWA) Home Chemical and Recycling Centers or to any number of local service stations and auto parts stores that accept these waste fluids and used oil filters.

West Southwest County Transfer Station
13400 S. State Road 7 in Delray Beach
Monday-Friday: 7 a.m.-5 p.m.
Saturday: 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

To prevent fuel, oil or lubricant spills, transport the used motor fluids in containers sold at retail stores or clean plastic containers with a lid. Clearly label all containers and never mix used oil with other liquids – including water.

One cup of spilled motor oil can contaminate more than 62,000 gallons of fresh water. So please keep sand or kitty litter handy in case a spill happens

In the last fiscal year, Palm Beach County residents safely disposed of or recycled almost 4.9 million pounds of home chemicals. This included more than:

  • 507,000 pounds of motor oils
  • 79,500 pounds of fuels
  • 40,000 pounds of antifreeze
  • 16,500 pounds of filters

Dear Commissioner
I am unable to pay my electric bill. My bill has doubled this summer because of the intense heat and I am afraid I will be disconnected for non- payment. Does Palm Beach County offer any assistance in these types of situations?

Each day in Palm Beach County, hundreds of families face utility service disconnection. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and the Low Income Home Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) are designed to provide financial relief from high-energy costs to prevent service disconnection for families in crisis. Services include crisis utility and water payment home energy assistance.

Applicants can submit their application online at utilityassistancepbc.org or contact the call center at 561-355-4792 to make an appointment at one of our office locations or participating libraries. You can also contact the nearest Community Action Service Center.

Please feel free to call our office with any questions.
