September & October 2022 Newsletter - Issue No 124
Figgy owner,
We are delighted to publish our latest newsletter just in time for the BANK HOLIDAY weekend (well in the UK anyway).
Members living in Europe, the last two months of dry sunny weather must have been the most rewarding ever. Being such a 'summer car' most of us have to typically endure months of wet and cold weather using brilliant heating to survive. So it made a most welcome change to swap from heating to aircon. Sue and I took every opportunity to drop the hood, switch on that chilled air and enjoy every moment we could in Belle :)
Costs of living will make ownership harder
let's be honest, as a club, we're not here to comment on the economy, but we are living in such crazy times we believe the looming cost of living crisis deserves a mention. Today we have seen rising energy costs putting yet more pressure on the cost of ownership. We get it, that for many members, owning a Figaro is all about creating a much-needed escape from the doom and gloom of the news right now. But the cost of insurance, MOT and servicing a 31-year-old car can put a strain on finances. On top of this, major surgery can cost silly money and the net result is the car ends up being broken for parts. Unfortunately, we are seeing a continued decline in membership due to these factors. Although not much help in the big picture, we are proud of the fact that since 2010 (when we set up the club), the membership fee of £15 has remained unchanged and will remain unchanged. As they say "every little helps"

A PERSONAL WELCOME FROM KEVIN & SUE
Sue and I love running this little friendly club and are here to help in any way we can. Although I personally don't claim to know everything about the car, as a club we are truly blessed to be surrounded by such helpful and friendly members whom we can turn to, so ask away.
Lastly, we wanted to remind you that we are always on the lookout for great stories and helpful and interesting articles so please don't be shy and do get in touch.

Figs 4u taking orders for left-hand drive (LHD) Figaros
Leaders in left-hand drive conversions Figs 4u contacted us. Essentially the process is they buy the Figaro within the UK and fully refurbish the car and tailor it to customers' needs by way of colour and other features. They have the patent to then send these to Japan where they are converted to LHD and directly distributed to their overseas customers. Contact Jacob sales@figs4u.co.uk

New - Club Marketing Feather
Flags for car shows
Along with our A2 info board, we have created a couple of smaller feather flags to use when we are on duty at a car show to promote the club. Eastern Chapter Coordinator Adam Woods was the first to use one at CarFest South. The design means that you see FIGARO first, then Nissan in a smaller font. Our logo and strapline 'Retro. rare and reliable' completes the Flag.

THE IMAGE THAT MAKES US SMILE

Ann Wardrop was showing off Fifi at The Sir Jackie Stewart Classic at Thirlestane Castle Classic car show in June, as a passionate Figaro owner Ann wanted the Japanese kimono for my Christmas so she could wear it to shows if there was an opportunity to do so. Her husband obliged and I opened the lovely kimono on Christmas morning. Just before the car show she had a wee trip to wales with her cousins and passed a shop selling beautiful umbrellas which she couldn't resist!
Ann even managed to get a selfie with the main man at the car show, although she bet he was wondering why I had chopsticks in her hair 😂
Words and Pictures – Adam Woods
As the Eastern Chapter includes Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, it was about time we did an event over on that side of the region rather than Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex as we have before! As usual, I set about planning with the original aim to find a decent venue to meet for Breakfast, a nice place to stop en route, and then the final destination. The final destination was always Knebworth House, a beautiful neo-gothic mansion just outside Stevenage. We had secured a real rarity – access to park up (and take lots of photos!) in the House Courtyard, so that was a done deal… we had also sorted a nice farm shop to stop at on the way, so it was the starting point we needed to sort – however an impressive hotel for breakfast with sufficient parking for everyone just wasn’t available.
So, we thought again, consulted with some local area knowledge (thanks Jules and Tracylouise!) and we returned to a previous consideration Dunstable Downs and decided to start the day trip from there.
Risk assessments completed, website content prepared, the event announced, members emailed, registrations received, route checked… and the day arrived!
We had arranged our own exclusive Figgy Parking at Dunstable Downs, and one by one our 12 cars arrived, with a lovely mix of long-term members and new owners. We had decided to spend longer at Dunstable Downs as our meeting place, and with gorgeous weather, we are really glad we did – the setting looking out across the gorgeous rolling countryside was incredible, and of course, other visitors and their inevitable questions made a beeline for our line of Figgy’s! And because we spent a little more time at our meeting place than normal, it was really nice to have a little more time to chat and catch up.
At 12 noon we were ready and having done on our traditional beep beeps we started out from our amazing meeting place, heading off in convoy, along the carefully selected route that would take us through towns and villages as well as across the country, doing our best to avoid busier roads. Also, when chatting with members Nigel and Julia, they mentioned some friends of there’s would be along the route ready and waiting for the beeps and waves!
"We managed to stay in convoy pretty much all the way, had a fair few beeps and waves, and of course, also enjoyed the glorious summer sunshine!"
Upon arriving at Knebworth, one by one we drove through the entry gate and prepared to drive up to the manor house, while the team radioed ahead to the House to let them know we were on our way. And so we set off, heading up the sweeping drive across the extensive grounds, and on towards the house where we were greeted with the gates of the Courtyard swinging open, allowing us entry to park up in front of the neo-gothic manor house! What an amazing setting, made even better by the amazing weather, and the lovely team at Knebworth allowing us to access up one of the towers to take some amazing photos!
And from here we had our own Figgy Parking a short distance from the House, with Figgys sheltering from the sun, picnics out and some nice chit chat and time to relax! From here the time was our own, with the opportunity to go and see more of Knebworth like the formal gardens or tour the house.
Thanks as always to everyone who joined us on our Hertfordshire Day Trip… next up, we’re planning an event in the Cambridgeshire area for September!

Divine Guidance in Lincoln or Beelzebub on the M42
A few moments after collecting their Figaro Paul and Sue find themselves stranded on the M42 after the car came to a halt
Pictures and Words by Paul Greene
Were the forces of good and evil at play when Sue and I first encountered this strange car, which gives more smiles per gallon than any other vehicle on the road? I guess not really, it is just an alternative way of looking at things!!
There we were, me and Sue, minding our own business, just travelling back from an excursion to Holland. We had got off the ferry in Hull and were travelling south to Melton Mowbray-Pork pie capital of the UK. Then the idea surfaced that we break the journey up and call in for elevenses in the city of Lincoln. I don't know which one of us suggested this -It was obviously one of us-or was there some kind of divine intervention occurring?
We chose a pub very close to the magnificent cathedral in that city. Was there a guiding hand at play??-There are many places serving coffee we could have used. Part way through a well-earned cappuccino, a funny little brown car arrived and parked opposite the pub. The driver disappeared-but shortly returned with a second of these small brown cars-this was followed by a 3rd-all the same colour. The cars certainly started to attract attention. I was in the market for an older car and was pretty convinced it would be a Morris Minor.
Anyway, I made a few mental notes before we left Lincoln, and on arriving back I put the Internet to work. After a relatively short time - I decided that Figaro was the one for me and Sue.
Paul and Sue and the car's 30th Birthday last year
I especially liked some of the customised colours- Red particularly caught my eye. I found a garage in the west midlands that had produced some customised cars, so off we went to view our possible car. It was a low-mileage green version, the car was solid and everything seemed to operate. We had a test drive in a recently completed car, left a deposit, and waited for a phone call to arrange collection.
A few weeks later, the call came through, the car was ready for collection!! Fantastic -so on a sunny Sunday morning, we caught the train over to Birmingham. Excitedly we set off in the reddest red car I have ever seen.
“Having had the divine guidance leading us to the Figaro in
Lincoln, little did we know that the demon “Beelzebub” was
about to test our commitment to the car”
After about 20 mins -on our maiden voyage- we came to a halt (overheating If I remember?), on the hard shoulder of the M42. The motorway was extremely busy and noisy. So deafening was the noise on the motorway – I could not hear the mobile phone in the car. I needed somewhere quiet!? Having seen Chris Bonington climb a few peaks in his time, the steep embankment on the motorway held no fears for me. Leaping like a gazelle over the fence at the top (this is where Sue and I recall the incident differently – Sue described my masterful leap to be more like a pathetic grovel under some barbed wire, which snagged one of my best jumpers and almost reduced me to tears?! Surely Sue was not remembering the incident clearly??) Anyway, once over the fence at the top-I found myself surrounded by a flock of sheep-several of whom showed a great deal of interest in my telephone conversations with the garage owner and rescue services!!
Our resolve was being tested, who would win, Good v Evil!
Suffice to say the goodies won the day!! Hooray! The car was sorted and returned to us and we have had the best of times. The car has graced the circuits of Silverstone and Donington – plus the Ace cafe several times. It also transported my eldest daughter on her wedding day.
One last little thing-Joining the owners club followed on very quickly. My partner and co-pilot -Sue, resides in Hyde Heath-only a stone’s throw from club HQ in Holmer Green-Kevin + Sue-Fancy a burn up the Earl Howe road-actually it would probably be more of a Steady Smolder! (Ed, yes we would love to get together, let's do a local show?)

Centre Console Armrest Cup Holder
If you lift the centre armrest cover you will see a compartment that for some odd reason doesn’t enjoy the same level of finish that Nissan achieved throughout the Figaro.
Words & Pictures - Kevin Fagan
This handy addition fills this compartment and in addition to looking really neat also provides a place for drinks and your phone or loose change. The item has been manufactured using a 3D printer by member Jon Franklin. It can be rotated 180 degrees and is supplied with a foam base to protect the existing console.

North East Figaro Meet Up - Saturday 30th July 2022
It’s been a while since there has been a Figgy meet-up in the North East! And it’s long overdue!! 8 figs attended this event last month
Thanks to the following members for attending: Mia Brain & partner, Dennis Dunning, Jane Ellison-abates, Kaveh & Kasia Khyabani, Martin Maltas & partner, Holly Lindhop & partner, Janice & Peter Johnson & Keith Yarrol.
Organised by our local chapter coordinator Gabriella Giovinchi our members attended this event located at Wynyard Hall.
The venue has a fascinating history, enriched by a huge cast of characters, who all played their part in its remarkable story. For generations, thanks to the considerable social and political influence of the Londonderry family and their circle of friends, Wynyard performed an important role on the world stage, playing host to royalty, aristocrats, politicians, diplomats, artists and writers. Their lives and loves, triumphs and disasters, pleasures and past times illuminate this wonderful house, shedding light on a vanished world.

Painting – Engine Bay and Inside Lower Boot
This project costs just £22 and can make your car look WOW!
Words & Pictures - Kevin Fagan
I love showing the car off and have spent many hours cleaning the engine as best I can. Although this now looks fab the quality of painting within the bay always bugged me. I could not afford or even justify removing the engine and all its parts so tried a 'work-around' solution.
This involved hand painting with a brush (I know what you're thinking) and then spraying with lacquer. I was so impressed I also painted the areas around the lower boot and inside too and again with excellent results.
I would not have published this if I wasn't impressed with the end result, but I will leave it to you to make your own assessment.
I de-greased the area, applied paper and brushed on the paint
The touch-up paint is very 'flat' so it is possible to get away with it
After 24 hours apply spray can lacquer evenly
The result looks great, with a nice shiny finish
I even painted along the bulkhead area around the lock release
After a few days I will apply wax to protect the paintwork
The inside of the lower boot is masked ready for paint
A small paint brush allows you to insert it into the pot
Like above, carefully paint the area with the paint brush
Before you apply the spray make sure you protect with paper
The finish looks so much better than the original flat paint
Like above I attend to apply wax in these newly painted areas

The rain didn’t dampen Figgy spirits at CarFest North!
For the 8th consecutive year, from 22nd to 24th July (with a 2020 Covid gap), Figaro Owners Club members headed to the Bolesworth Estate in Cheshire for CarFest North, the brainchild of Chris Evans, which raises funds for UK Children’s Charities.
Words and Pictures Ken Graham
If ‘familiarity breeds contempt’ this doesn’t seem to be the case with our members and CarFest North, as this year, we had eight cars (our largest number ever!)
Those arriving on Thursday to set up joined fellow members and friends for a ‘getting to know you’ or, indeed, a ‘nice to see you again!’ pub meal at the Egerton Arms, thankfully close enough to the campsite to walk – and this set us all up for the weekend ahead.
Below - The Figaro Owners Stand. Eight figs attended. Only a Pale Aqua required to complete the classic colour set
During the day our members staff the Club stand on a rota basis which ensures we always have members around to chat with visitors but also allows everyone to get around the festival to engage in the daytime events (this allowed me to catch Sir Chris Hoy being interviewed by the BBC’s Louise Minchin which was really entertaining!)
As ever our stand gets loads of visitors, many returning ’fans’ who visit us every year together with the usual ‘What are they?’ and ‘OMG! I want one!!’ comments.
In the evening the music on offer was wide-ranging – despite a COVID call-off (The Fratellis) and an ‘admin issue’ call-off (Richard Ashcroft) we were still treated to Sister Sledge; Seasick Steve; McFly; Steps, The Feeling; Lulu; Roachford; Ricky Wilson; Mel C; Faithless Sound System; Nile Rogers & Chic and Ronan Keating amongst many more.
Typical UK weather with sunny intervals interspersed with multiple heavy showers over all three days didn’t manage to dampen our Figgy enthusiasm, but grateful thanks go to Dominique Pearce and Alan & Sheena Harvey for bringing their gazebos along – with 16+ folk needing shelter they were both absolutely essential!
Thanks though also go to every single member who attended – your support for this event makes it what it is – rain or shine!!!

Carpet – Re-dye process
With the Figaro being over 31 years old now, chances are the carpet is looking a tab bit worn and most probably a little grubby in places which the vacuum cannot reach.
Of late we have seen more and more members attempt to breathe new life into it, by applying a liquid dye or spray paint. Below is an article by a member on the process and experiences.
Words and Pictures: Prem Reynolds
My experience of this was an interesting journey as to start with I decided to go down the spray route and purchased the Figaro Club Spray Can. The colour match was OK but it made the carpet really hard.
We decided to take the Pale aqua to grey – it was badly stained with Japanese coffee and mud that just wouldn’t shift. I used a liquid carpet dye from Leather Colour Doctor (see above) and sprayed it on using a compressor gun. Air dried and the result are fantastic.
COST OF PROJECT
The cost of the dye was £22.99 x 2 Bottles so say £46 for the complete restoration plus free labour!
NEW CARPET OPTION
This compares very favourably to installing replacement carpets which are available from The Figaro Shop which costs £359.36 – £587.99
I personally think the new grey makes the exterior colour and interior cream “sing”. The original faded pale aqua, albeit factory correct, just seemed to clash. This new colour makes the interior smell and look so much better
HOW I DID IT
This was the process I followed using the carpet dye recommended by John at The Leather Colour Doctor:
- The original pale aqua carpet was badly stained and brown from coffee and mud.
- Removed carpet from the car.
- Washed the steel panels and 30 years of the grime away with various cleaners.
- We also found a Yen coin, hair clips and hair!
- As an option, we decided to soundproof the entire car so went through this 2 stage process
- Using the foiled bitumen then high-density foam on top ready for the new carpet.
- Hung the carpet outside and hit it with every carpet cleaner known to man.
- It was then washed/rinsed with steam/warm water jet wash and boy was it brown!!
- The years of grime took a while but eventually, the water ran clear.
- I then used a Karcher carpet cleaner to suck up the excess water and left it, touch dry.
- Places it outside and in my garage to air dry for several days.
- We then hung it up in the garage ready for spraying the new carpet dye.
- We opted for a grey colour to kill the stains but match in with the car interior (dash/piping)
- The dye was applied with an air compressor and spray gun.
- We also tried the normal trigger bottle spray but very time-consuming – but worked.
- It was also scrubbed into the fibres as recommended by John wearing rubber gloves.
- 1st coat is left to dry.
- 2nd coat was applied and provided a much richer colour.
- Left to dry before spraying with a spray can Scotch Guard treatment.
- The carpet was then fitted back into the soundproofed car.
- New mats fitted to seal the deal.

Figaro and Friends at Woodies Sunday 14th August 2022
Six figs attend this event in Netley Abbey where a wine bar called Woodies played host
Words and Pictures: Gary Wilbur Wright
Here in Netley Abbey, just outside of Southampton we are kind of on the border between the South East and the South West chapters of the club so living here it’s a bit more difficult to get to things that are organised, basically means travelling further which can be a bit of a pain at times.
So here in the Netley Abbey we have a great wine bar called Woodies which does good food and drink but just as importantly has a large car park and the chap who runs it called Connor is very amenable to hosting car meets.
So with the help of a friend’s daughter called Genevieve (who runs Fuel Power, have a look on the internet, it’s a YouTube channel focused on vehicles – link is Fuel Power – YouTube) we organised our first “Solent” car meet on Sunday 14th August calling it “Figaro and Friends” so we could get more cars there. As it turned out we had six Figaros and five other cars turn up on the day which wasn’t too bad for a first try at fairly short notice at the height of the holiday period.
Of the six Figs, we had two quite new owners, Sue Spencer and Diane Bell. Sue has a very nice Lapis Fig whilst Diane’s was in a rather sparkly metallic red with some cool alloys. So I think it helped them with being able to get to know some other club members and also gain more information and knowledge about their new unique cars.
More known around the club was Dee Davies dressed to match her very lovely Topaz Mist Fig. Also we had Tom Brake with his Dad Shaun along with Gurt and Ezra their Figs. Last but not least was the Fig belonging to my wife Marcella and her Pale Aqua called Betty so we managed to get a line up in season order of the four standard colours. We know of a few more local Figaros so hopefully, we’ll get more turn up next time.

LOCAL SOLENT SUB-CHAPTER
There was talk on the day of seeing if we should propose a sub-chapter for us local to the Solent area so having spoken (by email of course, after the day) to Kevin and Sue that is something that is currently being considered. I hope we will run a pilot to see if this idea works and can generate more club activity/interest.
For the “Friends” that came over, apart from my X-type Jaguar 3 litre, 4×4 estate, we had a cute 1954 Austin A30 van, a 1990 Citroen 2CV in amazing condition, an early Mazda MX5 NA with the cute pop-up lights, and an awesome Westfield XI (Lotus replica ) that looked more race car than a road car, so a good spread of cars. We plan to have more local to Solent events, so watch this space.
Many thanks to all who helped make the day possible and most of all, fun; and also many thanks to everyone who turned up on the day and made it special for us all, see you next time.
Thanks, Wilbur.

Meet our members
We love to publish pictures of all our brilliant members with their Figs, so don't be shy and get in touch and we promise to include you in the next edition!
Alan Sykes - We have also been making the most of the weather, in fact so much that I need to check if we are getting to the 3,000-mile insurance policy limit. I went to the Motorist with Kav and several other cars, nice people, and a nice drive out. Living the dream.

Annie Biggs - This is Annie with her fine-looking Topaz Mist Figaro.

Gary Wilbur Wright - Showing off my Figgy
at the Newbury Retrofest
Chris Rooney - Here’s my Topaz Mist, Chino, out and about celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend in Rutland. As you can see, Chino was mingling with royalty and HRH herself couldn’t help but admire him 😎🇬🇧 Rutland is the smallest county in the UK and is lucky enough to have one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe, Rutland Water. Well worth a visit in your Figaro 🤗
Sarah Avery - You're always asking for pictures, so what about this one of a new Figaro model? We think this qualifies to call Fiona the Figaro an FUV - Figaro Utility Vehicle. In what other car could you transport a gown and framed espalier tree? With no plans to make this purchase when we set off, it's just as well we were out in Fiona. Photographed with proud owner Sarah holding on!
Nina Paton - This is me at Crowthorne Carnival. I had a fantastic day winning 'Highly Commended' award for my Figaro.
John Manes - Won 'Best Import' at the Woodward Dream Car Show in Detroit last week if it’s worth putting in the newsletter. Up against exotics, XKEs, a rare Ghia 1500, a number of classic Alfa Romeos, etc.
Our son Daniel had always wanted a Figaro having seen the car at his local garage when he was just 16. After saving for a number of years (plus a small contribution from his mum and dad!) he, at last, brought an emerald green model in May 2008. See him pictured with Figgy aged just 19 bless him >>
Following the purchase, we searched on the internet for a club in the hope we could attend events and meet other owners. We were amazed that at that time no club existed so the Figaro Owners Club was born!
"We decided to build a basic website and forum which took a few months and on the 1st March 2009, pressed the publish button and waited to see if anyone wanted to join? Within a week we had 10 members, a month 35 and a year 478!"
Today the club has around 1,300 members worldwide in countries including New Zealand, Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden and many more.
