Donating to a nonprofit? 4 Things to Know.
With more than 1.5 million nonprofits registered with the IRS across the country there is no shortage of options to choose from during the season of giving. Here are four consideration when donating to a nonprofit this holiday season and why you should consider going local.

  1. Make sure the organization is legit! Did you know that every nonprofit is required to have a letter from the IRS authorizing them as a tax-exempt organization? Go ahead, request a copy and take advantage of a charitable tax deduction and rest easy knowing that you're not being taken advantage of. You can also go the digital route and visit sites like GuideStar or Charity Watch.
  2. Donate to a cause close to your heart! It's your hard-earned money and it should be used in a way that's meaningful for you, your families and friends. In addition to monetary donations consider volunteering your time and talents to a nonprofit. You never know how a warm meal, or a small toy can impact an individual's life.
  3. Donate locally and experience the direct impact on your community. Depending on your donation size, you may or may not have the resources to see your dollars at work. Chances are, if you apply your donations to your local community, you can see your funds at work, helping neighbors with real assistance during a time of need.
  4. Know where your money is going! Just like Google Maps and Waze, sometimes you need direction in order to decide on your route. Apply the same thinking before contributing to a nonprofit. Have a conversation with the CEO or someone on the board and request that your funds be applied to a specific expense or program; or entrust them to make those decisions for you.

On behalf of our organization, we thank you for being charitable this season. Choose with your heart and choose wisely. For more information on how to help AIRS, please contact us!
