Please note:
- Individuals over age 65 may receive the non-adjuvanted quadrivalent vaccine (Flucelvax®) or the adjuvanted quadrivalent vaccine (Fluad®) at the clinician’s discretion.
- Patients with egg-allergy may receive any flu vaccine (egg-based or non-egg based) that is otherwise appropriate for their age and health status. Additional safety measures are no longer recommended for flu vaccination beyond those recommended for receipt of any vaccine.
- Clinicians should NOT vaccinate themselves or other GW MFA employees, unless it is a part of a routine appointment and the EMR is documented.
-
The pharmacy will offer flu shots by appointment only this year beginning Wednesday, September 6th. All other vaccines will continue to be offered on a walk-in basis. Clinics should still offer to administer the vaccine if a patient is already in the clinic for an appointment.
Providers and Clinical Staff
All new flu codes will be set up in Epic beginning Aug. 28 for the 2023-2024 Flu Season. Please use the new immunization workflow in Epic to order and document these shots.
Managers
- You may order only a 2-week supply of the flu vaccine from the Clinic Dispensary starting today by completing the Influenza Order Form.
- Please do not place bulk orders. The vaccine comes in packages of 10 doses each (e.g., a quantity of 5 will be interpreted as 5 boxes, equivalent to 50 doses).
- Your order will be available in 1-2 days. Ensure the consent is completed and the Vaccine Information Statement is provided for each patient.
- Most clinics outside of the 2150 Penn location have already received an automatic shipment of doses, based on historical demand. Do not begin vaccinating patients until Monday, August 28th when Epic has been fully loaded with the new flu formulations.

Employees
Employees located in Foggy Bottom should get their vaccine from the Pharmacy in room G-201 (South Entrance) this year. Please make an appointment or visit us during employee walk-in hours on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in October from 7:30-8:30 AM.
Employees located outside of Foggy Bottom: Occupational Health will communicate the dates/locations of upcoming flu shot clinics in a future e-mail.
We are maintaining a tighter control on inventory and the pharmacy will appropriately charge these shots to occupational health as well as report the vaccination to the DC Immunization Registry as required. The pharmacy team may also reallocate flu shots between clinics, if needed to reduce overall inventory.
