MIA urges insurance carriers to reconsider prescription refill time limits due to the May 13 flooding
Maryland Insurance Bulletin 25-7, issued on May 15, 2025, urges health insurance carriers to consider the impacts of the May 13 flooding in Allegany and Garrett counties when enforcing time restrictions on prescription medication refills and the replacement of durable medical equipment, eyeglasses, and dentures. The Insurance Commissioner encourages insurers to voluntarily waive such restrictions for residents in the affected areas while the state of emergency remains in effect. The bulletin emphasizes the importance of flexibility to support residents who may have lost access to essential health resources due to the disaster. For more details, please see Bulletin 25-7.

Join the State Advisory Council on Hereditary and Congenital Disorders (ACHCD)
MedChi is currently looking for members interested in joining the State Advisory Council on Hereditary and Congenital Disorders. ACHCD advises the Maryland Department of Health on identifying and considering conditions present at birth and/or inherited from parents. The Council assists MDH with various tasks such as, the implementation of newborn screening panels, educating the public on hereditary and congenital disorders, evaluating the effectiveness of Maryland’s hereditary and congenital disorder programs and advocating for those that have been affected by these disorders. The Council includes healthcare providers, legislators, and community members. If you are looking to get involved, please contact Hamida Mansaray at hmansaray@medchi.org. Please note that this position relates to a vacancy that will open in June 2025.
