Fighting the fentanyl epidemic

The professionals at IMPACT Substance Use Disorder Services are often the first point of contact for people seeking help. Fentanyl is a critical threat for both casual and chronic drug users because many street drugs are laced with it. “People are overdosing on cocaine, heroin and gabapentin (an anticonvulsant and nerve pain medication) because it was cut with fentanyl and the victim didn’t realize what they were buying,” said Patricia Gutierrez, IMPACT program director.

Alarmingly, some clients are reporting fentanyl as their drug of choice. “IMPACT’s role is to connect people with a detoxification center and residential treatment before it’s too late,” Gutierrez explained.

IMPACT also provides information about how to access Narcan and fentanyl test strips, as well as collaborates with community partners such as the Milwaukee Overdose Response Initiative (MORI) to save lives. “We’re working together to give people a fighting chance.”

Need for food resources continues upward trend

IMPACT 211 is experiencing an upward trend in calls for emergency food and food-related assistance. The increase started in late 2022 and jumped in March when supplemental food benefits were discontinued. Higher costs for groceries, utilities, rent and many household goods are complicating matters for those in need. For context, IMPACT 211 responded to 2,042 requests for food resources in May 2023, a 117% increase from May 2022.
