Fire Suppression System Association Lays Out 5 Year Plan
In 2017, the FSSA Board of Directors created a strategic plan that will span the next five years. Four goals were approved and are the core competencies that will serve the members and advance the mission. A May 2 fire at an auto supplier plant in Michigan which shut down SUV production at Vance's Mercedes-Benz plant triggered an explosion when fire suppression systems added water to molten magnesium.

That's according to a report from Eaton Rapids (Mich.) Fire Chief Roger McNutt, which was released Monday, the Detroit Free Press reported. The force of the explosion underlined the point many officials made earlier this month - that it was a miracle no one was killed.

Washington County Public Schools is trying to recover student data - including grades and attendance records - that was apparently not properly backed up and permanently lost following a minor fire that downed multiple servers more than a week ago.

Some servers were quickly restored, but the one supporting the district's Synergy student system that stores student information - including attendance records, grades and schedules - has created the most challenges for technology staffers.

Los Angeles Times

The new era of big batteries has already drawn scrutiny after fiery electric-car crashes across America and Europe. Now, U.S. city planners are worried about the same risk of hard-to-control blazes as these power-storage units make their way into basements and onto rooftops.

"You can have these things go on fire, and then hours or days later, they can reignite," presenting a new challenge for first responders, said Paul Rogers, who led New York City's effort to establish battery safety standards until he retired as a lieutenant with the fire department this year. Firefighters - "if they act inappropriately - they could get killed," he said.

climateHas Climate Change Run Its Course?

The Wall Street Journal

Climate change is over. No, I'm not saying the climate will not change in the future, or that human influence on the climate is negligible. I mean simply that climate change is no longer a pre-eminent policy issue. All that remains is boilerplate rhetoric from the political class, frivolous nuisance lawsuits, and bureaucratic mandates on behalf of special-interest renewable-energy rent seekers.

Judged by deeds rather than words, most national governments are backing away from forced-marched decarbonization. You can date the arc of climate change as a policy priority from 1988, when highly publicized congressional hearings first elevated the issue, to 2018. President Trump's ostentatious withdrawal from the Paris Agreement merely ratified a trend long becoming evident.

corrosionCorrosion Protection in Dry Pipe Systems

Fire Engineering

Corrosion in automatic fire sprinkler systems is a concern to those who design, install, and maintain these systems. The black, foul-smelling water that is sometimes discharged from sprinkler systems during flushing and flow testing is the result of corrosion of the steel by oxygenated water.

This corrosion can be a general surface corrosion which is active only when fresh oxygenated water is introduced into the system and remains until the oxygen in the water is depleted. It may also be localized, forming pits in the steel sprinkler piping that are covered by heavy deposits of iron oxide and other minerals inside the pipe. The pits will eventually cause leaks. The mineral deposits will restrict water flow during system tests and when sprinkler heads are fused from heat or fire.

chooseChoosing the Correct Clean Agent Suppression System
5/15/18

By Eric W. Forssell, PE; Scott Hill, PE; and Bernard Kramer, JENSEN HUGHES
Consulting-Specifying Engineer

Clean agent fire suppression systems are used to protect facilities with high value per volume. They work on a total flooding concept, causing quick extinguishment of a detected fire, limiting damage to the protected space and its contents.

They work on a total flooding concept (filling the entire protected space) and, consequently, their cost is directly proportional to the volume of the space to be protected. Typical spaces protected with clean agent systems include data processing facilities, telecommunications facilities, art-storage facilities, and other high-value buildings.

Boeing 747s Back in Demand

A funny thing happened to an older generation of Boeing Co. 747 jumbo jets on their way to dusty oblivion in desert parking lots.

Instead of being scrapped, the humpbacked planes are back in demand as workhorses of global shipping. Booming trade is stoking the need for big, long-range jets to haul time-sensitive goods, from Apple Inc. iPhones made in China to fresh flowers grown in Latin America.
