Two Sheriffs in the National Spotlight
Tioga County Sheriff Gary Howard was featured in the November/December issue of
Sheriff,
the magazine of the National Sheriffs Association, in its "Meet the Sheriff" column. It’s the last feature in the magazine so if you didn’t read your entire copy, you may have missed it. The article points out that when Gary interviewed for his first job at the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office in 1977, he told the Sheriff he wanted to be Sheriff someday. Almost thirty-nine years later Sheriff Howard is living that young man’s dream, having become Sheriff of Tioga County in 2004.

Sheriff Represented at Key Events
Representatives of the Sheriffs, Chiefs and DA’s met Tuesday with Commissioner Mike Green and DCJS Staff to discuss establishing a Criminal Justice Research Consortium to benefit local law enforcement agencies in need of applied research. The consortium would bring together academic institutions with experience in criminal justice research and Sheriffs’ Offices, Police Departments and DA’s Offices in need of research, to help them make evidence-based decisions in their operations. Guided by an advisory board composed of the stakeholders, DCJS would fund approved research projects and, possibly, implementation of the findings through small project grants. The Advisory Group will meet again in the Spring with a goal of establishing the Consortium by Fall 2016.
