Civil School Phase One Held in Albany in April 

Over 50 civil staff from 27 county sheriff's offices attended the week-long Phase One Civil School last week at the Albany County Courthouse in Albany, NY. Deputies and other staff from Sheriffs' Offices around the State attended the program, which was taught by deputies with expertise in civil enforcement law. We are grateful to the following instructors for dedicating their time: Kim Ward of Tioga County, Chris Schaub of Rockland County, Ron Bill of Broome County, Mike Grossi of Westchester County and Kevin Owens from Ontario County, and a thank you to their Sheriffs for allowing them to participate.

The second week of this two-week school will take place from May 18th to the 22nd and will focus on more advanced topics. The school is required training for Sheriffs' Offices seeking civil office accreditation. During its more-than-30-year history, the program has trained over 2,000 Deputy Sheriffs and other Sheriffs' employees. The Sheriffs' Association Institute provides the only statewide training program for civil deputies, and the training is provided without charge to any civil personnel nominated for the school by a Sheriff.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells  announces the graduating class from the St. Lawrence County Correctional Academy this week. The class includes correctional staff from St. Lawrence, Franklin and Lewis Counties. The Academy is headed by J ail Administrator Peggy Harper  and  Correction Officer Anthony Ormsby. Congratulations to all!
Suffolk County Sheriff Vince DeMarco  shared a photo of a Bald Eagle that stopped by the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office Enforcement Bureau in Yaphank this week. The Bald Eagle has made a comeback in Suffolk County over the past few years with recent sightings in Shelter Island, Riverhead and Shirley. The sheriff shared a few facts about the Bald Eagle, the emblem bird of the United States:  Wingspan: 5.9 – 7.5 fee;  Weight: 6.6 – 14 pounds;  Lifespan: 20 years (In the wild)

Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple, with NYS DMV GTSC Assistant Commissioner Charles DeWeese, held a press conference to kick off the Teen Safe Driving Coalition this week. Sheriff Apple thanked Commissioner Deweese and Albany High School for helping  spread the word to keep young drivers safe and explained his ALIVE @25 program which has young drivers attend a class if convicted of a moving violation.

Niagara County Sheriff James Voutour has been appointed Vice Chair of the National Sheriffs' Association Traffic Safety Committee. Traffic Safety  Chairman Sheriff John Whetsel and  NSA  President Sheriff Danny Glick extended offered the appointment to Sheriff Voutour this week. Congratulations Sheriff!
