Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino Announces Appoinment of Daniel Izzo as Undersheriff
The Fulton County Board of Supervisors approved Sheriff Richard Giardino’s request to appoint Daniel Izzo, of Caroga Lake, as the new Fulton County Undersheriff this week.
 
Dan Izzo is currently employed full-time by the National Center for Security and Preparedness. He is a program manager who develops and manages training courses for law enforcement officers statewide at the State Preparedness Training Center in Oriskany.  His duties include on-site training for officer safety, active shooter and S.W.A.T. team certification. Mr. Izzo also works part-time for the Sheriff’s Office as a Tactical Training Instructor. 

Mr. Izzo served 28 years in the Navy, most of it as a Navy Seal. He successfully completed more than a dozen operational deployments to Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He was awarded two Bronze Star Medals, one for Valor, and three combat action awards. His last three years in the US Navy he was the Operations Master Chief at Naval Special Warfare Basic Training Command. There he oversaw the day-to–day operations, supervising over 200 Seal Instructors and 800 Navy Seal candidates. 
 
"Dan Izzo is extremely well qualified, if not over qualified, to be a leader moving the Sheriff’s Office forward. His experience will be used to continue to dramatically increase the training for the Law Enforcement Division and Corrections Division,” Sheriff Giardino said. "Both the staff and the citizens will be very well served by the addition of Undersheriff Izzo. His temperament, demeanor and leadership skills are unparalleled."

Dan is scheduled to start on Monday December 11, 2017.
Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard Declared Winner of Erie County Sheriff Election
Incumbent Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard has been declared the winner in the Erie County Sheriff election over two weeks after polls closed.  The only undecided race for Sheriff now is the tight contest for a replacement for retiring Suffolk County Sheriff Vinnie DeMarco, with the final tally in that race not expected until mid- or late December.

Erie County Board of Elections spokesman Mario Alaimo said the absentee ballot count that caused Democratic challenger Bernard Tolbert to delay an official concession resulted in a net increase of about 300 votes for Sheriff Howard.

“It’s not enough for Mr. Tolbert to overtake,” he said of the margin. Combined with the unofficial tally of the machine vote, Mr. Alaimo said Sheriff Howard now leads 110,585 to 106,898 with fewer than 1,000 outstanding affidavit and emergency ballots still to be counted.

This will be Sheriff Howard's fourth term.

Remembering Long Time Oneida County Undersheriff M. Peter Paravati
Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol announces, with regret, the passing of former and longtime Oneida County Undersheriff M. Peter Paravati. Undersheriff Paravati served as the second in command of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office from January 1st, 1995 through December 31st of 2010 under retired Sheriff Daniel G. Middaugh. 

Undersheriff Paravati was most proud of his work overseeing the completion and opening of a new 448-bed jail that really modernized the correctional facility. Undersheriff Paravati was also a pioneer in developing programs and policies to prevent suicides in jails across the state. 

Prior to becoming Oneida County Undersheriff, he worked for the New York State Commission of Corrections for many years and while there, was honored by New York State Governor Mario Cuomo for his commitment and dedication in dealing with jail related issues. 

"We send our most sincere condolences to the family of Undersheriff Paravati during this difficult time," Sheriff Maciol said.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time, but information will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
Yates County Sheriff's Secretary Sandi B. Siwak Retires with 30 Years of Service
Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike shared the news that Sheriff's Secretary Sandi Siwak retired this week after 30 years of service. Sandi was appointed Sheriff’s Secretary in 1987 by former Yates County Sheriff Jan Scofield but has served for 25 years with Sheriff Spike. Sandi was the Civil Clerk for many years. She also serves as Secretary to the STOP DWI Program. Her colleagues decorated her office for her last day and Sheriff Spike presented her a 30-year award plaque – an award of gratitude for all her years of public service to the Office of Sheriff.

Saratoga County

The fourth annual Convoy for Tots benefiting Capital Region Toys for Tots collected 22,196 toys with an estimated value of $300,000 for children in need, shattering the goal of delivering 13,000 toys.

This year’s Convoy for Tots doubled the records set by the event in 2016. The story of the convoy received national and international media coverage. "I am amazed to see the generosity of our community. People were out collecting until the day before to make sure that less fortunate children experience the joy of Christmas,” Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo said.

Albany County

When Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple introduced three K-9s graduating from the academy this week, one of them stood out. Baxter is the first Bloodhound assigned to the Albany County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit. Baxter is assigned to the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team and Albany County Fire Coordinator Gerald “Jerry” Paris.

According to Jerry, of the approximately 100 dogs serving the New York State Police, only four are Bloodhounds. Baxter turned three-years-old on Nov. 14. He weighs 84 pounds.

“The Bloodhound’s nose is obviously superior for tracking,” Sheriff Apple said. “He’ll make a great addition to our team.”
