File Sync Is Not a Backup

OneDrive, Dropbox, and Google Drive are excellent tools. They make it easy to access files from anywhere, share documents with your team, and collaborate in real time. But they are not backup solutions — and the difference matters enormously when something goes wrong.

Here is the core problem: file sync services are mirrors. Whatever happens to a file on your computer happens to it in the cloud too — instantly. If you accidentally delete a file, it's deleted in the cloud. If ransomware encrypts your files, those encrypted versions sync to the cloud and overwrite the originals. If a corrupted document saves over a good one, the cloud reflects the corruption. These tools protect you from losing a device. They do not protect you from data loss.

68% of businesses report a major data loss event at some point

89% of ransomware attacks attempt to infect backup systems too

60% of hacked SMBs close within six months

OneDrive vs. Real Backup: Side by Side

Here is how file sync compares to a purpose-built backup solution across the scenarios that matter most:

Scenario - OneDrive - Real Backup

Laptop stolen or lost - ✔ Protected - ✔ Protected

File accidentally deleted - Limited (30-day recycle ) - ✔ Restore any version

Ransomware encrypts files - ✘ Encrypts cloud copy too - ✔ Isolated copy unaffected

Database or email corrupted - ✘ Syncs the corruption - ✔ Point-in-time restore

Entire server fails - ✘ Not covered - ✔ Full system recovery

Recover data from 6 months ago - ✘ Not available - ✔ Available

The Ransomware Problem Is Worse Than Most People Know

Modern ransomware doesn't just encrypt your local files — it's specifically designed to find and destroy your backups first. In 2026, 89% of ransomware attacks attempt to infect backup repositories alongside primary systems.

This is why backup isolation matters. A proper backup solution stores copies in a way that ransomware cannot reach: air-gapped, immutable, or on a separate system with no live connection to your network. A synced cloud drive, by definition, is connected — which makes it a target.

The businesses that recovered quickly from ransomware in 2026 had one thing in common: 69% refused to pay the ransom because they had clean, isolated backups to restore from. That preparation is the difference between a bad week and a business-ending event.
