Grab your raincoat and visit the market tomorrow to pick-up all the ingredients you need to make a delicious meal for loved ones this weekend! There's nothing better than trying a new recipe, listening to music and spending the weekend with friends and family. Even though it will be rainy, we hope you'll join us tomorrow morning to spend time with your community.

Also, please note that the parking lot on Morris Street maybe closed on Saturday morning for repairs (weather dependent). There is still plenty of parking along Foster Street so you'll be able to easily access the farmers' market. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

What's for Dinner?
Beet, Lentil & Sweet Potato Soup
This soup is perfect for rainy weather. Don't forget to add your favorite meat to this recipe and serve with a side of bread and cheese from your farmers' market vendors.

Ingredients
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced or crushed
  • 1 lb beets, peeled and diced
  • 1 lb sweet potatoes, diced
  • 3 medium carrots, sliced
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped
  • 2/3 cup dried lentils, rinsed
  • 5 cups veggie or meat stock
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
Directions
  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan or soup pot over medium heat. When hot, add the onion and stir for 5 minutes or until softened. Toss in the garlic and stir for 1 minute.
  2. Add the beets, potatoes, carrots and celery. Stir for 1 minute, then add the lentils and thyme, stir once, and then pour in the stock. Add the turmeric, then bring to a boil, reduce the heat to medium-low, and cover. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the lentils and vegetables are tender (about 30 minutes).
  3. Stir in the paprika and simmer the soup for another 15 minutes.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.

This week we will be sampling: our Hibiscus Lemonthyme Mead, floral, earthy and herbal dry-style mead with NC wildflower honey, dried hibiscus petals and fresh lemonthyme.

We will also be sampling our Honey Chai Mead, like a warm mug of chai tea, our Honey Chai Mead is a loaded infusion of exotic spices, mingled with honey. Smooth, semi-sweet, and especially comforting in chilly months.

And we will also have our Fig Orange Mead, a semi-sweet mead delightfully nuanced with caramelized honey, and fresh fig notes. Made with local, roasted celeste and brown turkey figs, NC wildflower honey, and orange blossom honey.

We will also have bottles available of Ginger Mead, using local ginger root in an aged semi-sweet dark wildflower honey traditional mead; and our Apple Cyser Mead , a dry-style cyser with crisp, tart apple highlights .

Chapel Hill Creamery
Hamburgers were one of Portia's favorite foods growing up and she made cheeseburgers for our last staff meeting with our delicious ground beef and Hickory Grove cheese. Ground beef is on sale this weekend for $5.00/pound so that you can cook it at home for your favorite dish. Jersey meat gets high rating for flavor and tenderness and we think you'll enjoy it. The yellow color in the fat comes from carotene and shows that grass is part of the cows' diet. We also have plenty of our whey fed pork. Feeding the pigs whey is a nutritious and sustainable way for us to use the byproduct of cheese making since milk typically yields 10% cheese and 90% liquid whey which still has protein, fat, and minerals in it. Choose pork chops, tenderloin, bacon, bacon bits, spare ribs, smoked ham hocks, and ground pork. Pick up some Smoked Andouille for gumbo at Mardi Gras. Other sausage includes Mild and Hot Italian, Bratwurst, Polish, Chorizo, Mild and Hot Breakfast, and Sage and Maple Links.

Paneer is available this Saturday; it can be gently fried and added to any vegetable or curry. Cook greens sautéed with Indian spices and a little cream for Saag Paneer or make peas and cheese (Mattar Paneer). It is being used at Lantern Restaurant in Chapel Hill for a winter squash salad. Other cheeses are fresh Dairyland Farmers, Hot Farmers, Hickory Grove, 10 month old Calvander, Danziger, and Carolina Moon. Our cheeses are each distinctive, from fresh to aged and soft to firm; ask for a sample or serving suggestions if there's one you haven't had. Our Dairyland Farmers and Hickory Grove melt well, Calvander is wonderful grated onto polenta or salads, and Carolina Moon and Danziger make a meal with a crusty bread paired with your favorite soup.

Thanks for supporting our farm through the winter months and coming to market. Bon Appetit!

Caballo Rojo Coffee
My name is Gabriela Kavanaugh and I am owner and roaster for Caballo Rojo Coffee, roasting locally here in Durham. My grandfather was a leading coffee roaster in Venezuela and I wanted to continue this family tradition in my local community. My goal is to create moments involving coffee that connect the international community,  that provides us with coffee, with our our local community. We are excited to be able to foster this vision by being at the Durham Farmers Market, providing you with cups of brewed coffee and bags of whole bean coffee.

Soul Cocina
Soul   Cocina  is a combination of eco-friendly philosophy and cutting-edge, dynamic approach to plant-based cuisine. We draw inspiration from Latin-American traditions and the availability of locally grown produce to create imaginative concepts.

We offer delicious tamales made the artisan way: with love, care and attention to detail. To ensure we respect tradition, we source wholesome ingredients before steaming them in banana leaves, creating a flavorsome and aromatic product. We pride ourselves on taste and quality, and it won't go unnoticed. Every bite you take will give you a taste of the rich Colombian heritage our tamales are built on.

We will also have soups and pasteles de yuca: delicious roasted yuca pockets filled with red lentils, brown rice and spinach. A handheld food very similar to empanadas, only gluten-free and made with wholesome ingredients!

Take home our ready to eat tamales and pasteles de de yuca or come hungry to the market because we also offer them warm to eat while you shop!
