Details about Orientation!
Radically Re-Imagine Orientation 2020
We are so excited to gather with you in the virtual world in less than a week!

As you prepare to travel to your new home, we want to share some information to make your transition into this year as easy as possible. This email has a lot of important information you will need before Orientation and in the first days of arrival in your locale; please read the whole email thoroughly and save it for future reference!

*The term JV/AmeriCorps member is used in our program to refer to both JVs who are AmeriCorps members and non-AmeriCorps JVs.
Orientation Information Hub
Orientation is an essential part of the JV year that offers a chance for you to explore the four values of JVC Northwest, your reasons for joining the program, and your hopes for the coming year. From August 3 (when you arrive in locale) through August 11, we will gather daily (virtually) across our locales to offer space to dive deeper into understanding your identity, the identities of your community mates and how you can grow your connections throughout the year, as well as getting to know your locale, service site, and the larger community.

In addition to the Orientation site you have already seen, 2020-21 JVs will have access to a password protected page, our Orientation Information Hub , to access the schedule, virtual meeting rooms, and other documents needed for Orientation. Formal programming will begin the morning of August 4, so familiarize yourself with the Orientation Information Hub access information to be ready to go for our first session at 8 am Alaska/9 am Pacific/10 am Mountain Time on Tuesday August 4, 2020.

After Orientation, JV/AmeriCorps members may begin virtual service and orientation to their service site on August 12, 2020. JV/AmeriCorps members may begin in person service (as deemed safe and appropriate to do so by their service site) on Monday, August 17, 2020. During Orientation you will receive specific information about your particular service site to know what your start of service will look like.
AmeriCorps Enrollment
If you will be serving in an AmeriCorps position, you were sent an email invitation from the AmeriCorps Portal to create a user account. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL.

Once you register an account, we can enroll you in AmeriCorps. You may be asked to complete an application on the Portal, which you do not need to do. The AmeriCorps Portal is used for requesting student loan forbearance, and managing your Segal Education Award after your service.

COVID-19 Safety
All JVs are expected to quarantine for fourteen days upon arrival to their locales. During this period, all community members should monitor themselves for any symptoms of COVID-19 and remain in the house as much as possible. You may go for short walks around the neighborhood as long as you wear masks and are able to maintain proper distance from others. We ask that you do not meet up with support people or others in the community in person during this quarantine period after the initial travel day.

Contact you In-Locale Coordinator to plan assistance with running errands (such as groceries, medication, etc.) while you are quarantined. Establish with your In Locale Coordinator how available they may be to your community to meet requests. The In Locale Coordinators are not on-call staff members.

If you are required or able to to get tested once arriving in locale, you and your community should follow quarantine guidelines above until all community members receive a negative result. If all community members receive a negative result, they do not have to quarantine for the remaining time of Orientation, but should still exercise caution and social distancing practices when going out into the community. All JVs in the house must receive negative test results in order to end your community quarantine. 

Before you begin your travel, consult the  Center for Disease Control (CDC) website  for information about limiting your risk while traveling. What your quarantine looks like will vary slightly based on state. Consult the health advisories and mandates in your new state below.
Arrival Logistics
Travel Day- Monday, August 3, 2020
You should have received information about your travel to locale from your Program Coordinator earlier this month. If you have any questions about your travel, please connect with your Program Coordinator.

If your plans change or there's an emergency during your travel day, please be in touch with your In Locale Coordinator, your Program Coordinator, and/or Chris Suriano, Recruitment Coordinator. Our staff will also be monitoring our main office line, 503.335.8202 for any urgent messages.
Luggage Allowances
Getting to our locales will require significant travel for most JV/AmeriCorps members and arrival in locale will likely include carpooling or other ride share option to your new home. You are permitted to bring two pieces of luggage to your locale. Be sure your full name and contact information are clearly labeled on all bags. If you are concerned you won’t be able to fit everything in these two bags, you are welcome to mail additional items to your specific JV community. You should have received your mailing address with your community bios. Please do not ship anything to your locale that will arrive prior to August 3. JVC Northwest cannot ensure appropriate delivery or pick up of any materials that arrive prior to the start of your service year.
Packing List
You will want to pack everything you’ll need for your volunteer year with you- a basic list is on our Orientation website here . JV homes are supplied with the basics like furniture, cooking utensils and dishes, towels, sheets, pillows, blankets, books and games (and usually lots of VHS tapes). If there is something that would make your new space feel like home to you, especially as you are settling in, consider if it is reasonable to pack or ship to your locale.
Final Forms to Submit
Please ensure all of your onboarding forms have been completed on the applicant portal before you travel. Many of these forms were due by June 1, 2020. A complete list of all forms can be found on your applicant account or online here. We are so excited to welcome you to our community. While this network will feel vast at the start this year, we hope that Orientation will be the start of building connections in your locales and beyond.
