MENV Academic Advisor

We are excited to welcome our new full-time Academic Advisor, Brendan Park, to MENV

Brendan Park (he/him) graduated from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) with an MFA in Creative Writing and worked as a lecturer in Composition, English, and Academic English before transitioning into his role as a professional writing specialist and fellowships advisor. At UCI, Brendan advised students from across the curriculum in applying to prestigious national and international graduate fellowships and merit awards such as the NSF GRFP, Rhodes, and Fulbright. This enriching experience enabled him to exercise his passions for providing hands-on student support and fostering the ambitions of impact-driven students and future leaders poised to effect positive social change.

A lover of the outdoors, good novels, and international travel Brendan is thrilled to join the MENV team as the full-time Academic Advisor to our next generation of environmental leaders!

MENV Career Development Office (CDO) Message

We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome you to campus in a few weeks! As you’ll hear time and time again, we encourage you to begin thinking about your career path early and often. The MENV Career Development Office provides you with a suite of career services offerings that you can take advantage of throughout your time on campus and even after graduation. You can see more about career services here: https://www.colorado.edu/menv/careers

So, how can you jumpstart your professional development journey now? Here are some ways to start engaging with the CDO this summer:

Read the Bi-Weekly Jobs Digest: Every other week, MENV curates a list of full time, part time, seasonal, and internship positions both locally and beyond. This is a great way to start exploring what types of careers interest you, and to keep your finger on the pulse of job trends and who’s hiring. Seeing what jobs require certain skills will also help you determine the best courses to take to prepare you for your dream jobs.

Schedule a career exploration session: Do you want to jumpstart your professional development work with the career team? Schedule a 20-minute Career Exploration & Meet + Greet session with any of the career team members. This meeting is designed to help you to jumpstart your professional development work prior to beginning the program and will help you to strategize how to best leverage the resources and offerings from the Career Development Office and thrive during your time on campus. You can meet the team and schedule appointments here: https://colorado.edu/menv/meet-our-career-team

Explore our Career Development Office Workshop Offerings: The Career Development Office provides a diverse suite of professional development programming and resources to its students and alumni. One of those resources is ongoing workshops that support both your career skills and your professional skills. You can see more on the upcoming workshops here: https://www.colorado.edu/menv/academics/workshops-seminars-field-trips

We can’t wait to share our full portfolio of programming with you this fall!

Campus Welcome Events Calendar

In addition to the MENV New Student Orientation, we also encourage your participation in the various campus fall welcome events outlined here. You can also download the app to see the full schedule.

The CU Boulder Events Calendar is also a good website to bookmark to keep up with the numerous activities taking place across campus throughout the academic year. For example, when filtering the calendar for “graduate students” on the right side of the page, a variety of events such as the Graduate School Orientation sessions and various Buff Meet-Ups show up with a description and registration details.

Student Employment

MENV will be hiring several Graduate Student Assistants throughout the academic year and these will be posted at the bottom of this page when available . In addition, you can search campus wide student employment positions on the Enrollment Management website: Student Employment | University of Colorado Boulder. Alternatively, you can also find student job postings announced on departmental websites. For example, the Environmental Center has several current fall openings.

If you are specifically interested in the financial aid “work study” program you can watch a short video about it here and then reach out to the Student Employment office with questions about these positions.

Transportation

There are a variety of options for students to get around campus, Boulder, and the Denver area.

CU Boulder students should receive an RTD CollegePass (bus pass) along with the BuffOne Card for use on local and regional transportation at no charge. Here is an excerpt from the BuffOne Card website describing the RTD pass:

You can ride all the local and regional buses in Boulder and Denver (with your RTD pass). This includes: Lightrail and local Hop/Skip/Jump/Bound/Stampede/Leap services. The SkyRide to Denver International Airport has no extra fee for EcoPass cardholders when taking the service to and from DIA. RTD EcoPass and CollegePass cardholders must pay the full fare for special rides like the Rockies or Broncos Ride. For route information visit the RTD website.”

In addition, this website managed by the Environmental Center, Sustainable Transportation, and also this page with Parking and Transportation provide helpful information for getting around by bus, bike, car, or on foot. One popular option is bike sharing with BCycle.

Now What?

We look forward to meeting you on August 18!

Sincerely,
