WOMEN NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS
|
|
Since the Nobel Prize was established in 1895, less than 60 women have been honored with the prestigious international award. This year, four women–Louise Glück, Emmanuelle Charpentier, Jennifer A. Doudna, and Andrea M. Ghez were added to that roster, triumphing in literature, chemistry, and physics.

IT IS NOT TOO LATE!
You may still complete a conditional registration (also called Same Day Registration). This can be done up to and including November third, but it must be done in person. However, your regular polling place may be closed due to the pandemic. Check with your county's election board to see where you can cast a ballot. Here is the link to the list of places to register in person.
You can check on your voter status in either of these two links,
Registration or Status. If you use the 'status' link you will need your driver’s license or ID card handy if you check this way. You can also call (415) 473-6456 here in Marin and ask them to double check on your registration. Be sure to tell your friends to check their own registration!
Once your ballot is complete, including signing the envelope, you can mail it (must be postmarked no later than November 3), bring it to a polling place or use one of the many drop boxes available.
Every vote counts!

Bills supported by AAUW California are signed!
|
|
SB973, which was supported by AAUW California for two years, finally became law. It requires specified private employers to submit to the Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) a yearly pay data report that contains wage information on employees by race, ethnicity, and sex. Also, 16 of our supported bills were signed, including all five of our racial justice bills. For more information go to “Capitol Track” on the AAUW California website

AAUW SCHOLARSHIP FUND APPEAL
|
|
This is the time of year when we support AAUW’s mission to achieve gender equity for women and girls in our community by supporting the AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund.
Thanks to the generosity of members and friends and grants from Bank of Marin and the Compass Marin Community Fund in the last fund-raising cycle, we awarded $1,000 scholarships to 6 students in the transfer program at College of Marin, awarded $3,500 each to two nontraditional women students at Dominican University and we added to our endowed funds to ensure our ability to keep awarding scholarships in perpetuity.
“In the fall and spring, scholarships are awarded to our students. During this time, our students are filled with pride and a sense that community members are investing in them and ensuring they can fulfill their educational goals and dreams … The scholarships awarded this year had an extraordinary impact – thank you.”
Keith M. Rosenthal, Director of Advancement College of Marin

Join us for an interview with Book Passage's Elaine Petrocelli, founder of Marin’s “liveliest bookstore” speaking on surviving as a business in the time of Covid. This will not be a traditional “Elaine’s Picks” book talk, but will focus on how Elaine became a bookseller, managed to grow her business locally, and now, as a result of the pandemic, not only has survived (so far!) but reached thousands across the country with her weekly Conversations with Authors programming. It’s a fascinating story of one spunky woman entrepreneur! Watch for the invitation to come via our gmail account, and please remember to RSVP so we know how many to plan for. Put the date and time on your calendar now!

I discovered the joys of AAUW as a young mother of three. Another mom invited me to a Saturday program while our husbands took care of the kids. It was terrific and I became a member immediately. When we moved from LA to Phoenix, the first thing I did was find the local chapter of AAUW. At that time the organization was primarily for stay at home moms who needed some adult time and a chance to remember their college years by discussing books and ideas in the AAUW groups.
When I moved to Marin, I was single, working fulltime and an only parent. I returned to AAUW once the kids were grown. The organization had changed. Most of the members were my age or older and everyone worked or was retired. I immediately enjoyed several groups. I was delighted when asked to become the coordinator of groups. I also facilitated the Lunch Bunch and Futures of Women book group.
The same year, I took over the Web. I’ve always enjoyed technology and wanted to move AAUW Marin’s Website out of the shadows and make it the “go to” spot to learn about our organization. After two years on other assignments, I am once again working on it. Currently, it is mostly up to date, but needs further organization and some current pictures. In fact, if anyone has a picture that would make the Homepage an eyecatcher, please send it along! In the meantime, check out Cherie’s list of anti- racism resources and Dale’s Fund page with a special tribute to those who contributed in honor of the Notorious RBG.
