MARIN BRANCH
OCTOBER 2020
In honor of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, your AAUW Marin branch board has voted to donate $1000 to the AAUW Greatest Needs Fund. As a tireless advocate for women's rights and gender equality, we remember Justice Ginsburg and thank her for her groundbreaking work to support the rights of women and girls.

Please help us double or triple the branch donation with a personal donation of $25 or more. Our deadline is Saturday, October 9th.

A trailblazer and tireless advocate for women, Justice Ginsburg overcame so many barriers and became a shining example to girls and women everywhere. This is one way to acknowledge her and how our mission dovetails with her legacy to us all.

VOTE
Another way to honor Justice Ginsberg is by carrying on in the spirit of the Voting Rights Act. Learn how to use AAUW National's Get Out the Vote Media Tool Kit.

Below is the information regarding voter registration.
The last date in California to register online or have your registration postmarked is October 19. After that you may still complete a conditional registration (also called Same Day Registration.) This can be done up to and including November third, but it must be done in person. This is the link to the list of places to register in person.

You can check on your voter status in either of these two links,
If you use the 'status' link you will need your driver’s license or ID card handy if you check this way. You can also call (415) 473-6456 here in Marin and ask them to double check on your registration. Be sure to tell your friends to check their own registration!

Once your ballot is complete, including signing the envelope, you can mail it in or use one of the many drop boxes available. Every vote counts!

VIRTUAL AAUW CA FUND LUNCHEONS IN OCTOBER
The 2020-21 AAUW CA Fund luncheons which spotlight local recipients of AAUW Fund fellowships and grants will be held virtually this year. We should all be very proud that the national Fellowships and Grants Fund is now fully endowed due to the generosity of members across the nation.
The dates are Saturday, October 10th and Saturday, October 24th at 1:00 pm.
In previous years, attendees had to drive to South San Francisco or San Ramon. This is much easier and you get the chance to hear a different set of speakers at each webinar.
Don’t forget to register for the Zoom webinars by clicking on the AAUW CA website. To register for the virtual luncheon you would like to attend, scroll down the list of events which are listed in order of date.

2020-2021 Local Tech Trek Week
In case you missed the September meeting Amy Anderson introduced this year's Tech Trek students to our members. The girls shared their summer zoom experience that was developed and coordinated by Angela Nuckles and Melanie Chancellor. All of the girls were enthusiastic and grateful for meeting the women in science who presented during that week. On the last day they were able to take a socially distanced field trip.

Continuing our focus on Marin individuals and organizations addressing issues of equity, we heard from Anita Jones of the Gaines-Jones Foundation. Anita’s foundation awards college scholarships to Black students in southwest Georgia and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Membership
A big thank you to all members for renewing your AAUW membership.
Your continued membership is helping to support AAUW’s mission to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy.  In this pandemic your membership and AAUW’s mission is more important than ever. As AAUW Marin continues to provide programs and interest groups through zoom along with in person golfing, new members are welcome at any time. If you have a friend or know of someone who is interested in our mission and activities I would be happy to contact them and let them know about AAUW Marin and all that we have to offer.

Upcoming Events
October Meeting
Confronting Racism in Marin
What It's Like Not to Be You.
On October 17 11:00 to 12:30 our branch program is a “co-production” with Marin Shakespeare, Lawyers for One America, the Jones-Gaines Foundation and WLPC at Dominican University and will feature 5 young men and women raised in Marin (Black, Latina, and Native American) who will share their personal views and experiences with racism here in the County. You won’t want to miss this program on how even here in Marin, a county which prides itself on being welcoming, smart, and action oriented, we are often oblivious to our own racism and the many structural societal issues which perpetuate bias, racism and ultimately significant social injustice.

Because of the number of people we hope will attend, the program will be a webinar hosted on the Marin Shakespeare site. Register at their link. Please do so before October 15 and also please email aauwmarin@gmail.com to let us know if you plan to attend.
